I'm so incredibly angry. I'm travelling home from London (Paddington) to Newton Abbot (Devon) for my father's birthday. It will cost £63 for return ticket. This is obscenely expensive for a 2.5 hours journey each way. I am booking ONE MONTH ahead. Don't say coach - I'm not spending 5 hours travelling on a Friday night. Any secrets for bookig cheaper train tickets? - is it true the cheap tickets are released in 'batches' so it's just luck of the draw when you get cheaper tickets, rather than how far ahead you book? Advice please!
This is a journey I do often but it's never been this expensive before - never over £40 that I can recall.
This is a question about TRAINS - I'm not interested in alternative forms of transport, thanks. I like the train and I don't intend to get a car or use the coach. Thanks for any intelligent replies to this genuine question.

Cheap Train Tickets To Devon

The availability of cheap tickets is dependant on likely loadings for each particular train. The busier the train, the less likelihood
of cheap tickets for it. Unfortunately, trains out of Paddington on Friday evenings are very busy, as First Great Western know only too well, and you are unlikely to get a cheap ticket for any train at that time of day.
Your best bet would be to travel with South West Trains out of Waterloo and change at Exeter St. David's. SWT fares are lower than FGW's and through fares from Waterloo to Newton Abbot are available. Have a look at www.southwesttrains.co.uk

I have to travel from Cardiff to London for work and I use train line - link below

Sometime it works out cheaper to buy a single instead of return. If I get a return it costs about £63.00 but when I get a single the cheapest I have paid was £19.00 and then book your tickets home separately
