There are so many different kinds of headaches and you're not specify so let me try this:
Migraines: the worst kind, usually choose one side of the face( both can take over whole face, that's called: Cluster Migraine) If you suffer this, lights, sunnglare, tension, noise etc..will make it hurt more and also can result in trowing up. If this fits you, only laying down in a dark & quite room, where hopefully you'll find some sleep to brake the pattern, will help, ( that's without Meds.) There are though meds. available and i suggest you get some help for Migranes will truly incopasatate you.
Other, more regular headaches,(most likeley stress related), can be helped with coldpacks, yes, or can drink some Chamomile Tea,(it's soothing & has some painkiller within) also, you might check into some Magnesium, for often, if there is a lack of it will cause headaches.
Hope this helps. (Another thing, if you're diet consist of too much sugar, wil bring on headaches)

One way you can get rid of it is to eat, when I feel hungry I get a headache. It is because of gas in your stomache. Another way when you sleep put your head on two pillows so gas doesn't go to your head. 3rd if you hit your head somewhere put an ice pack on the injury. Lastly, if your head is hurting in reaction to the weather make you environment comfortable for you.

A cold pack at the base of the neck works for my migraines. Sometimes heat helps.

Make sure you're not dehydrated as well. How about drinking a glass of water.. followed by a cup of soothing tea & comfy chair?
Put on relaxing music... and just do your best to let your tension melt away.

Good luck
