I think in moderation television can be good for children - it encourages them to use their imagination and be creative, plus it is great as a learning aid. However too much TV can lead to them being insociable, and even unhealthy as it is a less active alternative to sport.
As for what programmes they should watch, I think its completely unresponsible and potentially damaging to a child's personality to let them watch programmes that are aimed at adults - particularly violent shows, as what kind of an example is this to set for your child. Happy, sing song programmes are great though, and in my opinion there is nothing better than a classic disney cartoon!
Hope this helps :-)

I think tv can be a positive thing and I don't agree that it always has to be educational. I home school my two kids. They watch some tv. However, where we currently live we only get one channel. So, most of what they watch is on DVD. They watch many educational cartoons like Dora, Blue's Clues, etc. However, they often choose to do other things besides tv. The tv isn't a big deal to them because I don't make it seem taboo. My 6 yr. old is reading at a level two grades ahead of where he should be. My 4yr. old is about one grade ahead. Just last night I let my 6 yr. old watch 20/20 with me. It was about children growing up in the poorest town in America. It was a bit ahead of him and somewhat scary for a 6 yr. old. They discussed some harsh realities. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to watch it. He insisted he did. We watched it and it led to a very open and interesting discussion between us. This was a dialogue we might not have had if he hadn't watched the show.
My kids help me plan lessons. They give me ideas of topics to cover. Some of our topics get pulled from cartoons such as Scooby Doo!! We did an entire lesson on the egyptians all because the kids had seen something on Scooby Doo that made them want to explore that more.
As for all of it being educational--I just don't think that is fair. Is everything you do as an adult educational? Nope. We take time to just relax and veg. Kids need that too. I let my kids watch things like Spongebob and even Ed, Edd & Eddy. Many parents I know are so against those cartoons. Why? Mine watch it and are simply entertained. I see nothing wrong with that.

I think the educational programming for kids is great! They learn from it. Sadly a lot of the stuff geared towards kids is down right crap. For instance Cartoon Network has cartoons aimed for kids but in my opinion they are more for adults.
Too much TV is bad. Kids dont' get exercise that they need sitting in front of the tv all day.
Parents should limit it to an hour or 2 a day. That includes video games too.

It is not good if they sit and watch tv 24/7, some people let their kids do this just so they don't have to bother with them. But I let my daughter watch a few shows in the morning when she gets up, like Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, etc and these shows are pretty educational. She can say a few spanish words, and has fun dancing and singing along with the shows.

I have watched Playhouse Disney with my now 2 1/2 year-old son for 1 1/2 years, and he is already starting to learn his numbers and letters. He can recognize at least half of the letters of the alphabet from watching his shows. I don't just plop him in front of the TV. It stays on Disney all day...no terrifying news stories, no toy ads, etc. The only thing they advertise is their upcoming show/specials. We sing and dance along with his shows so he is not just sitting. He can sing the theme songs to most of his favorite shows. Where people make the mistake is just plopping them in front of the TV with no interraction with the parent. The only time I do that is when I am throwing a load of laundry in the washer, and that takes only a few minutes.

well,tv is educational,at times, there are some good shows on.The cons: Well, way too much violence, stupid shows, too many shows are ran over and over and over, like on nickelodeon, they run the same show every two or three weeks.Too many kids are wasting their lives sitting in front of the tube and not getting any exercise, when i was a kid(back when the land was flat ,and dinosaurs roamed the earth)we only watched tv at night or when the weather was bad, otherwise we were outside playing

I would think this would be an easy paper to write, but whatever.
Pro's
Educates children about social situations, family life, and right and wrong disicions.
Source of contentment when there is nothing else to do.
Con's
Can distract children from excersize, homework/studying, and can take away from child's sleep (if he/she stays up late to watch TV)
Can teach children bad and morally wrong things (pre-maritital sex, teasing, name calling, divorce, etc.)
Commercials making children want more and more

Pros: Educational, Informative, Induces Creative thinking, Positive Exposure
Cons: Phlegmatic(inactive), Negative Exposure, Distorts reality, Replaces Reading,
keep in mind that it all depends on parenting styles as well. Is the child at a babysitter or friends house? Does his/her guardians use the v-chip? Conservative or liberal household? Premium or local channels?

Con: Too much television, and not enough playing outside. Children do not get enough exercise these days, and they do not use their imaginations by just playing as children should. Television should be used as a treat, or a special time.
