First of all, I'm sorry to hear that this happened to your mom. By definition, stroke symptoms are permanent, this is different from so-called Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA's) in which the symptoms resolve. Still, many patients will recover some level of lost function with therapy and with time.

The most important thing regarding another stroke is the source of the stroke. If the clot came from her heart, which would be most likely given her age, she may need blood thinning medications. If it came from a vegetation on a heart valve, this would require a different kind of treatment...such as a heart valve replacement. If the clot is due to disorders of coagulation (your blood clots when it shouldn't) there are different types of blood thinners she can be put on. If the source is from the blood vessels in her neck (less likely given her young age) there are surgeries and interventions that can reopen those blood vessels.

Her chance at full recovery is probably pretty low from what you're describing, but she may recover some level of function with time. It is important to treat whatever underlying condition caused the stroke in the first place if that hasn't already been addressed. Good luck to you and your mom.

Hi,
Just to let you know my father in law had a stroke last summer at the age of 91.
Thank God it was only minor but his speech has already returned to normal.
He is on a regimen of Warfarin (blood thinner) so as to prevent future clots.
Stroke care is now far more advanced than it was and the prognosis is far better than years ago.
Make sure however that your Mom is under the care of a Stroke Unit and not a general ward.
I am sure things will work out.God be with you and her.
There is no reason to believe that another stroke is on the way providing the root cause has been established and appropriate medication/surgery prescribed

There is always a chance that she can recover with little or no long time effects. Just be there for you mom. Do whatever it takes to help her out.....while she's still on this earth. I wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions, I'm only an email or IM away. I wish you the best of luck.

She can improve with therapy, but a full recovery is rare. It's best to ask your mom's doctors.
