Yes it can be stopped but 2 working days notice notice is usually required.

If payment due to be made on 31st Jan you must inform your bank no later than 29th Jan that you want the payment cancelled.

It is only in certain circumstances that the payment can be stopped if 2 working days notice is not given as a Bacs recall is usually required and this can cause complications.

Ask whoever is supposed to make the payment. Some financial institutions require a few days notice to stop automatic payments.
