At his age, it is a major, painful and miserable surgery. It is the amputation of a part of his spine. When he was 5 days old, his nerve endings weren't nearly developed as they are now..Now,
I would be as removing a part of his spine..Because it is on his 'sitter' he won't be ale to sit without pain for a long time..He is looking to you for his love and protection. I just don't think you want to harm him ths way..

A distant family member had his cocker spaniel's tail docked at 8 weeks. (the soonest a vet would use anesthesia on a pupy) The puppy died of septic shock..Because the spine is opened on the end, infection went right up the spinal chord.

Can you? Yes you can but it is a lot more pain full then having it done at 3 days old. It's also hard to keep the tail closed up while healing just because the puppy sits on it or plays around. Once it is open it can get infected. When the pups have there tails docked at 3 days it heals easier because the pups eat and sleep.Talk to some breeders in your area they could give you a vet and some advice.

Rottweiler With Tail

Tail docking is normally done when the puppy is a few days old. At six weeks old, it's going to be an invasive, painful, and possibly expensive surgery.

Secondly, a puppy is too young to be separated from it's mom at six weeks old. Eight weeks is considered the minimum. There are behavioral issues associated with the puppy leaving it's mom this early, including a lack of play bite inhibition. You might have to make an extra special effort to teach this puppy that it's not OK to bite during play. You also might have to work hard at socializing him or her to other friendly dogs and puppies, people, and new or strange situations.

Hope this helps...

tail docking is done at 2 to 4 days of age. This prior to overdevelopment of nerve ends. A reputable vet will not do a tail dock after this time unless there is a medical situation where it is causing problems for the dog. In addition, docking at later times can result in paralysis.

Docking, when done in rottwielers must be done in the first few days after birth. Otherwise, it is a much more complicated surgery.

I'm not a huge docking fan, but it if someone is intent on doing it, it must be done early.

Six weeks is also too young for a puppy to be separated from its mother. 8 weeks is the minimum. Since I assume the pup has already been separated from it's mother, please take it to a vet for a health check and to get some instruction on how to care for such a young puppy.

I'm a breeder. It should have been done when the puppies were 2-3 days old. That's what a responsible breeder would have done. It can be done but it's going to be more expensive. Ususally when this is done the puppies don't feel anything because they are small.

Yes, if you want your rottweiler to feel inadequate for the rest of her life. Tail docking is terribly painful for dogs and the pain can last a lifetime.

no not at 6 weeks. it will have to be at least 3 mo old to have the tail docked because it can handle being put under to have it done. 6 weeks in not to young to be away from its mother. make sure you have its shots started .
