The standard of refereeing in this country is a disgrace. Unfortunately the SFA have yet to grasped the concept that the fans understand the rules. They still exhibit the sort of leadership displayed by Thatcher`s Tories. We know best, even when we don`t know what we are doing. Have you ever listened to Donald Mac Vicar, the hied yin in the referee`s dept. He always insists the refs were right regardless of what the fans are saying. Would have loved to see Brines try sending off Barry Fergusson at Ibrox for running to the crowd. Was it not Brines who sent of Neil Lennon the other week and was involved in the arguement in the last Old Firm game?

There is no proffesional referees in Scotland, so therefore, yeah they proberly will be poorer than other countrys, all the referres in scotland normally hold down full time jobs as well.

My hubby is a referee, not to this standard though he is a class 3, but looking to go quite far, considerng theese referres are just normal people doing normal jobs and doing this into the bargain, i think they are quite good, a lot of them anyway.

The traiining that is involved to be a referee is very intense espec at level 1 , remember this one man is looking out for every player in both teams, with only the help fom the officials and linesmen.

Give them a break, there getting no where near the cash the players are getting, and at the end of the day there not proffesionals!! England does have proffesional referees though.

Is this a dig at Iain Brines for sending off JVH. He was only following rules. Doesn't matter if it's in the 1st minute or the 94th minute, he ran off the field of play, into the crowd, hence the referee had no option other than to book him.
The referee's are assessed after every game and Brines would have been hauled before the authorities for not doing his job properly. For once Strachan got something right by saying "we all know the rules".

The game is full of cheats and divers. Craig Gordon got it right when he said that it was rife in the Scottish game. How difficult must it be for referee's to control a game when football is riddled with con-men?
They make judgement calls, say it as they see it. Yes, we all can be on the referee's back for 90mins but if there was more honesty in the game, the ref's would have a much easier job with less pressure on them, therefore would probably handle the game better!!!

Nowadys the refs need technical back up. TV coverage highlights all mistakes and the analysis that goes into all the games can be a bit frustrating. We all make mistakes its just that the mistakes we make are not televised and commentated on forever - Poll with his three yellow cards being a good example. The Fourth official should be able to examine video evidence and feedback. I woud not want to be a ref and I admire them for the job they do

I am. The standard of referee's is appalling they wouldn't be allowed to be in charge of an English conference game their so poor. Was at the hibs v falkirk game earlier this season Freeland destroyed the game with his blunders and constant stopages. The problem is that the sfa probably knows this they just have nobody better or no one else to put in charge of a game so they don't have much choice unless their is a rule change that allows importing referee's.

you are bang on ,what are players meant to do when they score ,be disappointed,it really is time for someone in a better viewpoint ,to oversee games with the aid of a communication device ,there is far to much inconsistencies, and also some times the refs are getting caught up in the drama around them,THEY NEED HELP. okay then dicko do you really think ian brines will book every player who takes 4 paces off the park ,in every game he oversees, or go by the rules,,you can check ,, and use his discretion, if he thinks the celebration, is not likely to cause any trouble.

Remember they're usually slow witted folk and love attention, I mean, what normal guy with a life would travel to Inverness and run about making a total prat of himself in horrendous conditions for the pittance they get??

referees need more respect, this is why a sin bin rule should be introduced into soccer. take a look at rugby, players have the upmost respect for the referees decisons and never answer back. to do their job properly they need more respect from the players.
