I'm planning a trip for the Olympics. Now people are telling me to wait, that it'll be too expensive, crowded, dangerous. Should I wait until 2009?

I lived in China before and I go every year. I plan on going in 2008, but not during the Olympics (because of other committments). The cost of air travel to Beijing and the cost of hotels will certainly be a lot more during the Olympics. But if you do what I will do--- fly into Hong Kong instead and do travel throughout other parts of China, you should be ok. Obviously it will be far more crowded during the Olympics. And in general, it's crowded in August to begin with. So I would only consider going for the Olympics if you really want to go to the Olympics-- not as an excuse to go to China.

Right now a lot of the sites in China are undergoing rennovation and much of the city is under construction in preparation. They are building several major subway lines. So if you do decide to go, and it's the first time, this year isn't the best. But by Spring of 2008, most of the rennovation and construction should be ready. Please also keep in mind that Shanghai is hosting the World Expo in 2010, so you can't completely avoid the big events.

I think it is too early to buy plane tickets now, but you can start looking for housing, etc. Not surprisingly the hotel will get really expensive by next year, but you still have a year to do it. Don't wait until 2008 but don't be rush too much yet. I would say later this year is a good time to plan. If you've never been to China, then it is a good idea to ask around for different information.

Usually when u go in China you go with a tour, everything should be organized from here...Of course if you go during the Olympic the price should be more expensive but not dangerous at all because will be all the world there...lol Chine is very big country so maybe u can find a lot people in the main city where will be Olympic attend but not all around Chine. I've been telling my friends about this: If you want to be in Beijing for the Olympics and want to do it economically yet enjoyable, apply as a volunteer for the Olympics. They have started the recruiting process. They need to have foreign volunteers to assist other foreigners to get around and finding places, etc. Ask yourself, is that something you want to do?

I can certainly see that it will be expensive and crowded, but I am certain it won't be dangerous.

It will be crowded but I was told the prices will be controlled. Still at every majoy sporting events, everything goes up. Too many foreigners so the local sharks up their prices. As for danger, I think the China government will increase security like never before so I am not too concern about it.
