first off whether a sword will rust or not does not determine the quality of the steel.

Stainless steel is the absolute worst steel for swords. It might work for a ginsu kitchen knife but not a 3ft long tool of war. (obsolete- but still a tool of war).

you still do need to oil it. mineral oil is your best bet.

here are some basic articles from sword forum international (a website that sword students and enthusiests exchange ideas and argue) on some points of interest to you.

1- sword care:

2- sword quality:

most of this relates to european swords- but the heat treatment section and other parts of it are relevant to all swords (just not the sword structure).

If it's carbonized steel, then yes...it will rust. Being that it will rust, you will have to keep it properly oiled.

On a carbon steel blade, even the oil on human skin can rust the metal's chemical composition....much less direct water exposure or humidity.

Use a mineral oil, and a proper dry cloth....oil, wipe, re-sheath. Nothing complicated.

Yes

Carbon steels do require protection from rust.
It is not the "Quality" of steel that makes it corrosion resistant,
it is it's "Content",it's make up.
The amount of alloying elements such as "Chrome" & "Nickel"
impart qualities of both strength and corrision resistance.
The presence of carbon brings "Hardenabilty" to the steel.
There is not a single "Stainless Steel" that will equal the edge holding capability of "High Carbon Steel"
The drawback is of course is it's lack of corrosion resistance.
