I'm an 18 year old Canadian female taking time off before Uni to work and then travel on my own. I've saved up about $2000 so far and I'm anxious to leave. That's not a lot of money but if needed I could take out a loan from the bank. I'd like to be abroad for around a year and I know I'll need to work in some manner while away.

I've always wanted to go to Scotland- the highlands really. The trouble is how expensive the UK is. If I do go there I will be stuck working full time in a major city- cities not being what had appealed to me in the first place.

My other option is to go to China. It's not at the top of my 'countries-to-visit' list, but I want to go nearly everywhere. The cost of living can be very cheap and I could easily find work teaching english when needed. I'm not sure I'd want to be there a year though.

I want to grow and become more independant during my time away. Which country do you think would be best for me; Scotland or China?

Thanks :)

I love the Scottish highlands, too. But I wouldn'ts stay there for the full year. In fact, when winter comes and I leave, my friends there want to leave with me! Go half a year Scotland (avoiding the winter) and the other half year in China !

hi, I am English and working in China. Yes, Scotland is very beautiful, trouble is the job situation. I dont think it would be very easy for you to find a job (with your age) which would enable you to support yourself. If you chose China you could really enjoy yourself on a little money and learn so much about another culture, very different. As you are Canadian you could find a job teaching English with no trouble at all. There are many small private schools who would pay you well, well enough to live a good life but not to save a lot. The great thing is that you dont need qualifications for many of the schools. Look towards the south of China, its very beautiful and the people are so kind, go for it, they will love you in the south.

If you are passionatte about the Scotland, you should just go as it is a lovely country.

I have relatives that have been to China and said it is amazing and the pictures are amazing, but your mind seems set on Scotland. You can always go to China another time.

Some of the cities in Scotland are not as big as you may think and the locals are really cool!

I would vote Scotland just because you seem unsure about spending a lot of time in China... so go someplace you think you will really love.
