What documentation is needed for me to travel to Japan to see my nephew (who lives abroad with his American mother and Japanese father) and return with him to the U.S.? He is a minor who holds a U.S. Passport. Do I need a consent letter from his parents allowing me to enter the country with him?

Any information would be greatly apprciated. :)

I don't know what you need to bring him through Immigration and Customs, but in any case, you should have a Medical Power of Attorney from the parents allowing you to make decisions in the event of accident or illness while the child is in your care.

You need a court order or a notarized letter at minimum. Check with the state department.

yes - you need a notarized statement of consent from both parents authorizing you to take the child in and out of any country.
