maybe a st. christopher and have it blessed by a priest. also, continued support throughout his deployment. make sure he has all the things he needs for his comfort for it will be what he needs most while there. there are many things that they request and i am sure you can find out once he gets there what he wants and there are also lists of things. the internet can help you there. and most especially, pray for him and all those that are there.

Send him pictures. Every night I look at the pictures my wife sent me. A care package is a good idea too. Healthy food that can take the time in the mail is a good idea. A funny movie is a good way to get your mind off of the day's events. A handwritten note is also a nice personal touch.

well kika if this friend is also a boyfriend(or even if its not), then the best thing you can get over there is letters, alot of them , as much as possible, with pictures if possible. I'm a marine and i know from experince that getting a letter over there is like all the christmas presents you ever got as a kid combined. I don't know what makes it so special. i guess it just feels good to hold something that didn't come from that place.

Lots of phone cards!! My fiancee is in the army too and he says he can't get them. And he also wants Beef Jerky (see a pattern??). And you can be sure that when he opens the bag and all the guys want some, he'll be thinking of you and what a great friend you are for remembering him. The boxes take a bit to get there, be patient.

I carried locks of hair from my family (we were told pictures could be used against us by proper techniques if captured) I also got letters every other day and that helped maintain my "grounding" and sanity. It was nice to read a dozen letters from home at one time - even if they were late.

Stay in touch and don't quit! I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

Send him or her a care package with lot's of food (that will hold up), and magazines.

My brother was in Iraq for a year and I sent him a total of 6 packages with all types of food to remind him of home.

He really appreciated it!
