I have a decision to make. I'm going to redo my room this summer. But should I do a more moden, trendy room or a historical room that I really want. I've been dreaming of a historical room, but I want something I can show off. Which should should I choose and, more importantly, WHY??

I would look at the period of the house, and work your personal taste into that. So you can do wall textures and woodwork, and major furniture pieces to be historical, and then fill it out with modern stuff. Tie the two together with the fact that you love it and call it eclectic. You can also use color and texture to mix periods like this.

If you do a good job on the room, and you love it, it is comfortable for you and your guests, they will love it too. Which is showing it off.

The reason you should honor the style of the house is because that is what you have to start with. And from there you can go all the way with it, make a full sized Victorian dollhouse room if that is your personality, or deviate from it and go with trends.

Another reason I would do this is because woodwork and wall surfaces are PART of the house. IF you have a room that is out of touch with the rest of the house, if you try to sell it, this may be seen by the next buyer as something to UNDO and restore the room to its roots in the house. Fixer-uppers mean less money even if it is NICELY done. On the other hand, your paint colors are reversible, and accessories will usually cost less, you can change them more often, and take them with you. So if you go away from the architecture of the house with little things, it doesn't matter what the next buyer thinks of your decor.

Well first off, if you do what you want in your room then you will want to show it off. Start looking through books and magazines, pictures on the internet and keep snipits of things that you really like and dream of.
If you do modern and trendy, then you are sacrificing...and for who? So everyone else likes your room? They aren't the ones that have to live with it, decorate it, and most importantly live IN it.
Historical rooms never go out of style, we are always going back to the old trends in today's day and age.
Especially being a bedroom, if that's what relaxes you then go for it.

Best of luck to you!!!!

The historical room. Reason? Because it's what you REALLY want.

You live there, do what makes YOU happy. Don't decorate for others. Also, modern changes on practically a daily basis. Today's colors are out tomorrow. Unless you have the $$$ to keep up with it, decorate in a timeless manner.

Have fun!

If your home is older and of the historical nature it would only be fitting to remodel as such to that era.

Go with a traditional look if that's what appeals to you.. You're the one who is going to be sleeping in it, make it your own.
