is it a national anthem, or do England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own anthems? I just saw a video of Mark Elder conducting it -Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall '06. Simply stirring!

No. The national anthem is "God Save The Queen".

"Land of Hope and Glory" (the music by Elgar, more properly known as the Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1") is what's known as a patriotic song. Which makes it's usage a US graduation ceremonies amusing to many Brits...

England, in particular, doesn't have it's own national anthem.

The others have songs which are generally thought of in the same category (e.g. "Scotland the Brave"), but which aren't actually official anthems because they aren't actually nations.

The Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 seems to have caught the world's imagination. I agree it is a stirring tune that raises the hairs on the back of this Brit's neck. Not a national anthem though but a patriotic tune.

I now live and work in Thailand which is a member of the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) some of whom are ex-British colonies: Burma, Malaysia, Singapore and others have been in conflict with the west and have thrown off the shackles of colonialism.

Every year in Bangkok I am invited to the ASEAN annual celebration, also attended by the ASEAN ambassadors. And every year smartly dressed Thai soldiers parade the flags of each nation around the hall to the stirring tune of Pomp and Circumstance No 1.

It appears that if these ex-colonial countries see the irony of the music then they certainly don't show it. I have often been asked by my Thai and Singaporean friends, at these gatherings, why I am smiling broadly. No amount of words can adequately to them my amusement.

So a song that was intended to celebrate the 'virtues' the the British nation and of Britons themselves is adopted by other aspirants to bolster their own image.

I think, its more like Rule Brittania, with land of hope and glory close second and Jerusalem third...although our real national anthem is God Save the Queen (not by the Sex Pistols!)... I don't think any of the songs have the same place in society though as the Star Spangled Banner.

Land of Hope and Glory is not the national anthem. It is God Save The Queen.

Malcolm answered this well. All four countries have songs they relate to but the national anthem is god save the queen.
This is our star spangled apart from the fact all four countries want their own identity.

we do all have our own anthems, but one unified anthem also. personally i think land of hope and glory is more preferable. after all our monarchy is nothing more than a tourist attraction, so why the hell it should be god save the queen , i don't know
