We used to have radiator heat and now have central air. I have noticed most of the family coughing and having problems breathing when we run the heat. I am looking into having the ducts cleaned but my question is what can I do to add moisture to the air without adding the bacteria that some of the humidfiers put out?

If your ducts are located in the floor, empty out some metal vegetable cans, fill them with water and put them in there when the can heats up,it will release moisture into the air. My mom puts the tea pot on, to put moisture in the air during the winter.

I have asthma. I have trouble breathing sometimes also. But not for the same reasons. I do however, use a humidifier. It works great. You just have to know what to do, so that you don't get bacteria, spreading throughout your room. If you are afraid of the bacteria spreading in your room, you can clean it every week that you use it.

Humidifiers are perfectly safe if you buy the right stuff to keep them clean and the antibacteria agent that is made for the humidifier. All the directions for cleaning the system comes with the humidifier.

You can have a humidifier installed into your furnace that will cycle when the heat runs. They also have new furnace filters that will decrease the amount of allergens and germs that recycle through the house.
