Check with your local used auto parts retailer (junkyard). You should be able to get one for several hundred dollars!!

For the cheapest, I'd go with the junkyard trans, most yards anymore will give a 30 day or better warranty to make sure it works good when you install it. Some will even offer an extra warranty for extra cost.
The 3-speed trans was a pretty good unit and didn't have the problems the overdrive transmissions had, so finding a good used one isn't as difficult as finding a 4-speed auto.
Yes, people are looking for that kind of truck, vehicles needing repair can be sold easily to someone looking to save money and fix it themselves. Of course, you won't get as much as if it was drvieable, but you can sell it. Condition also affects how fast it sells, if it's in good condition other than the trans, it will sell faster than if it's all beat up and looks bad.

i wouldnt advise getting one from the junkyard,its may be in worse shape than the present trans.unless the place offers a warranty be wary of the parts.that said,advanced auto/autozone all carry transmissions for the dakota.mine uses the 42rh trans
