That is not the case at all. The 51f59 series has an incredible converter and does an absolutely fantastic job of up scaling 480p(the native resolution of your standard DVD) to a near High Def 1080i output, far and away a better picture in all respects.
What I believe has happened is that you've talked to someone either fairly knowledgeable and misheard some advice though it's more likely it was a mistake on the part of an 'Expert' giving faulty info. Lucky for you I have the correct advice, gleaned through much research on this subject on various A/V sites and forums.
I'm not sure of the output selections available when using a 360 as a DVD player as I use a dedicated DVD player rather than my 360 so as to save wear and tear($30 vs $399, you do the math) Anyways, here's the scoop. For optimal picture quality you should set your DVD player output at 480i(not 480p) and set your TVs virtual HD setting to 1080i. This allows the set to upscale the image to 1080i, the picture quality almost on equal with that of true HD!
The reason behind the 480i over the 480p is that it allows the sets converter to work with a like interlaced(i) signal rather that taking a progressive(p) signal and having to delace it it to an 'i output before up conversion. Believe me, every combo possible has been tried on multiple setups to test this and the theory is sound. Yea, some of those A/V types CAN be rather anal in their persuit of perfection but hey, the benefits are undeniable.
In fact the converter in this set is every bit as good as that of a true up converting DVD player as this has been tested as well against muultiple players. Oh, there's a slight difference when compared to a premium $200+ player but it's so negligatble as to be a moot point. Yes, this set really is that good!
In case you're wondering I do indeed own this same model and have been overjoyed with it's performance be it gaming or simply watching some toob. Here's a little bit of a perk for you. If you do a search in the questions section by punching in '51f59 settings' you'll find my answer to another owner's queries as to optimal picture settings, complete with service menu upgrades for a truly amazing picture. Just do me a favor as it's in voting and is tied with someone who has NO knowledge of what he's talking about and I'd like to resolve this vote. I suspect he's been using multiple avatars to cheat the system because HIS answer is so far off base I can't believe he'd get even 1 vote. Don't worry, mine is the second answer, the long winded and VERY detailed one so there'll be no mistake. Trust me, you really want to use these settings, just make sure to change them on each input you're using, one for the 360 and one for your TV signal source, be it cable or satelite.
There you go, an answer and a free gift to boot, just like opening a box of Capitain Crunch on a Saturday morning. Good luck with your set and enjoy the enhanced picture you're about to get.
