First, No
This is like comparing oranges to apples- they are both fruit!
There are many things to look at and to keep it short and try to shed some light on things. Let me first say that in all of us we are insecure in some way or another. What it depends on is whether or not the insecurity lays in the wrong places resulting in a bad outcome. Example: If someone has been in relationships for a long time and becomes dependent on that person (being there) and suddenly that relationship ends because of one reason or another, that person starting their new relationship may feel insecure because of the fear of loosing that new person too. Where thing can go bad is that that person my not be able to withstand the relationship ending and may start to do drugs or alcohol, or more.
On the other hand, smoking is very bad for your health and creates a number of problems.

Smoking cigarettes is often started because the person is insecure
but it is not like a baby and a pacifier. A baby sucks a pacifier because of a reflexive need to suck for feeding, the action of sucking gives her comfort much like eating comfort food would. A person sucks a cigarette out of a need to be liked, to be 'cool'. Sometimes it is to rebel against parents and sometimes it is to impress a friend or a crush.

It very well may have started that way. Many people start smoking as a teen due to peer pressure, and the teenage years are when we are the most insecure. But Cigarettes are very addicting and in a short time, you think you "need" the cigarettes. So, not everyone that smokes today is insecure, but they probably were when they started.

To me, smoking isn't so much as being insecure, as it's just something to do. I started smoking when I was 18, didn't inhale, ect..then a year later was..got off when I got pregnant, and went back to it. I like smoking because, it gives me something to hold, enjoy, but, it's not just the smoking and nicotine, I've gotten the inhaler from my dr. and it's like holding a cig, but, also, you get the nicotine from it, but, it is not like really smoking. I saw a friend yesterday, hadn't seen in years that had quit smoking, and I was so proud of, only we went to see our kids in college and she smoked and I said what are you doing, and she said, I smoke, but, no one but you knows, my daughter, my husband no one knows and you can't tell. I said fine...so, to be honest with you writing this, maybe we are all a little insecure, and smoking is an addiction just like anything if you do it too much. I know the benefits as well as the health issues. So, I guess, I don't know...if it's not a cigarette, it's food, or drinking, or drugs...all of which can kill you...so, sorry, thought I could tell you, but, guess I'm just as confused as you.

Not necessarily insecure, but you have developed a bad habit.
You know smoking is bad for you and those around you, but you have used smoking as a coping method and now you are addicted. Similar to how some people require a cup of coffee in the morning to give themselves a boost. Smoking is more toxic.
I hope you other the person you are concerned about can kick the habit.

I say NO, smoking is NOT a sign of being insecure. Some people find smoking to be relaxing while other people are addicted to it. Nicotine is addictive. I used to smoke 4 packs of cigs per day before I finally quit. I do how-ever now smoke cigars. About 6 - 8 per day. I also find these relaxing and I also feel I am secure with myself in ALL aspects of life.

It is much like a pacifier, but it does not mean you are insecure. Lots of people need a lot of oral gratification and that is one way some people get it, besides the tar and nicotine. It is a very bad habit but when you try to quit you have to come up with a replacement for that oral gratification you were once getting. Maybe someone should come out with adult pacifiers besides what evryone reading this is thinking.

I never thought about it, but i guess it could. At least at first. I think it takes a very insecure person to be peer pressured into starting smoking. But then obviously nicotine is a very addictive substance and after a few smokes a person may very well become physically dependent on it.

Cigarette smoking has nothing to do with emotional security. Cigarettes deliver a drug, nicotene, to the brain that causes an addiction. If a person is not smoking, their brain craves the drug and must have it regardless of their emotional state.

Its a ridiculous habit, like driving nails in your own coffin. On one end of a cigeratte is a small flame and the other end is a fool.
