Everyone asks this, and let me tell you there isn't one clear cut answer for it. However, what I've told my students in the past has been they have to work on keeping their shoulders back, their back straight, arms out front, and go into the spin with as much speed as you can -- if you master this, you will not travel much at all. DO NOT KEEP YOUR EXTENDED LEG STRAIGHT, bend it slightly so that your toe pick is pointing outward, the back of your extended leg should touch the inner side of your spinning leg.
The one thing that will help you is to start doing squats --- lots and lots and lots of squats. Getting leg muscles and a strong back is not only imperative for sit spins, but also for camels and straight spins and not to mention it will improve your jump

The faster you enter the spin the easier it is to go lower and get up. One of my problems when first learning the spin was getting up when i was sitting as low as possible. This was because my legs were not strong enough. But after two weeks (everyday) practicing the position i was able to do it. By practicing i mean standing then dropping down into the position, holding it, (then the main focus of the excerise) standing back up. This will work the muscles and get it so you will be able to come up no problem.

Okay there are a few things. to be able to get low, you have to have good muscles in your thighs and back. for the legs, practice going up and down to your sit spin position off ice, while standing on one leg (just like when you are spining, but dont actually turn or swing your leg)
then to be centered, you need some amount of speed to make it easier, so on the ice get good crossovers and a good fast leg swing into the sit position.
i always take a bit longer to get into the position, but you should try to get down as fast as you can.
to get up from the spin, you also need thigh muscles, but if it is difficult you can actually use your hands to push off the bent knee to help you stand up. then spin abit with your leg open (to get balance) before crossing your leg into the scratch spin.
gooood luck!

Try spinning lower. its sort of like physics with the centripial force pushing and keeping you inwards. As you go lower, try to center out your spin and apply force in one place. lolls...kimmie meissner travelled alot on her spin at nationals in her short, and I can c ur concern....try asking different coaches for different tips. This book I read said also to keep yourself as inwards as possible (tight, tight, tight!!!) , sashas spins are soo pretty!!! , maybe doing a spin combo would help???

My advice-
-Do 1 foot hops off ice to strenghthen leg muscles.
-Practice the sit spin position off ice.
-To get your legs togther put a bean bag in between your legs to get then together.
-To keep balance, keep your back straight and put your hands staright out and connect then.
Good Luck!
