Every one here is going to tell the breed of dog they have is the best dog for kids, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog. AKC.org You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.

If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “kid-friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:

Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.

Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.

German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.

Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.

Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality—spunky, curious and friendly. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshund’s love to dig, romp and run. They are affectionate, especially with children, and enjoy going for walks and other forms of exercise

You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home. If breed is not an issue you could always adopt a pup (not an adult) from your local pound or shelter. They come spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations and you can find all ages, sizes and breeds. As I stated in the beginning any dog can be good with children it is a matter of how the are trained and socialized. Small children should never be left alone with dogs.

Labs are usually great with kids. They've got good temperaments, are tolerant, very intelligent, and are extremely loyal (only drawback is that they shed a lot). You still want to make sure that you train the dog well and never leave young children around it unsupervised. Even the most gentle dog might bite if it feels threatened.

While I'm all for adopting adult dogs from shelters (they need the homes most), when it comes to kids I'd say get a young puppy. You won't have to worry about food aggression or other bad habits that some older dogs have.

There are TONS of dog breeds that are good with kids. Usually if a dog is raised with kids, it grows up loving them. Try looking for different breeds either by buying a breed book, or look online at dogbreedinfo.com. You can search through all different breeds, it will tell you all of its characteristics, and what the breeds temperament is USUALLY like. Other than that, you can look on petfinder.com to find puppies and dogs in your area that are in need of a good home. This will also tell you whether or not this animal is good with kids, and what age kids they are best with. I hope this helps, good luck finding your new friend!!

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

Hi first you need to find a breed that fits your lifestyle. If you like to go jogging and are pretty active than lets say a mastiff would not be a good fit. And you also need to know on how much money are you willing to spend on food, vet bills, toys, etc. And you also need to know how big you want your dog to get, small, medium, large,or extra large. And after figure out how big you want your dog you need to lots of research call different breeders and ask lots of questions, and than decide if you want a puppy or a rescue. i hope this helps you out.

You are going to get a thousand different answers from a thousand different people. No one can really answer this question for you. You haven't told us anything about your work schedule, your financial situation, your lifestyle, your activity level, your home situation, your childrens' ages, your childrens' experience with animals, etc. Any answers you get will just be uneducated guesses from children telling you their favourite dog - dogs that will probably be a terrible match for you.

In general, you don't want a
- toy breed as they are too fragile for small children
- Super large breed like a mastiff or a great dane. They can accidentally hurt small children
- Sighthound (whippet, saluki, Afghan, borzoi, Italian Greyhound, Greyhound) because if your child leaves the door open or the gate open, the sighthound can run away never to return
- Flight risk dogs like a Husky. Ditto sighthound reason.

Check out your local rescue groups. If you don't have your heart set on a specific purebred dog, they have a ton of great dogs available. Mixed breed and purebred. I see tons of smaller lab mix type dogs (medium sized dogs) come through looking for homes. They are usually very gentle and in need of a loving family. There are also a ton of beagle and beagle mix dogs that come through in my area. Great family dogs.

Good luck in your search! : )

My stock answer is take the kids to the local pound & let them save an animal's life.

If you are searching for a purebred, I suggest a boxer. They love kids & are very suitable family pets. They are generally not aggressive at all, but they still make great protectors because they look formidable. They are high energy dogs and will require plenty of exercise. The only draw back is that if they are left to their own devices, if they are not included and made an integral part of the family-if they are left to themselves for long periods of time, they can get into trouble.

Aside from that, they are exellent companions and family members.

all dogs are good with kids, it depends on the dog owner's trainning really. consider your activity level, committment, patients and time before you decide to get a dog as a pet. It is a full time job, almost like having a kid that does not speak you language, so if you're willing to say "yes" to all the above, you'll be a great pet owner!

Depends on a lot more than what's good with kids, doesn't it?
What size do you want?
What type of coat care?
Active/not active?
Kids don't care for the dog.... parents do. What do YOU want that is good with kids?
Please modify your question and perhaps we can help.
