People are just being idiots. A cops pay isn't too great considering how long they work, conditions, and how hard it can be on families of a police officer. My brother is a cop and he got lucky for the timing to move to a new city. They were just signing a new contract with a $3,000 instant signing bonus. He got it all which was enough to buy a house and furniture. I agree with you that they don't have any right to say that they knew, it's just ignorant people trying to rantionalize feeling that THEY deserve more. Living costs are a deal breaker unless you have a six figure salary now days. I say let them huff and puff, can't really stop them anyway. Just have to ignore it.
My brother didn't go into it for the money. He wanted to help people. All of you who are saying that they get paid enough, how hard to you work to save everyone else 50+ hours a week? I honestly think they deserve a little more than someone sitting behind a computer all day answering customer service calls. They don't get paid every week, it's every two weeks to a month like the rest of us so bills come, money goes and you still have to buy food. They are still human too at the end of the day.

My father is a retired police officer with Detroit...when I was growing up, he had to work two and three jobs sometimes to make ends meet. It was the late 60s/early 70s when everyone was calling them "PIGS" and I just never understood it.
No cop ever goes into police work for the money. But when they DO ask for decent wages, it's because they DESERVE them. It's so funny that the people who are against cops are the ones who've been in the most trouble with them...is it any wonder?

This is a very good question. Problems I have with your premise:
1. You are not in it for the money. (If you were, you wouldn't have chosen the profession).
2. Police officers do get decent living wages. (If they didn't, their unions would be raising hell)
3. Police officers are employees. If you don't like your job, or its pay, quit. Believe me, there's plenty of new guys coming from the academies every year.

That's why police form unions, to gain a living wage for it's officers. Without collective bargaining in good faith the average civil servant would starve.

I do not say that nor will I. How much is it worth to place your life in danger to protect others? Same can be said for military pay!

Many people in this world are underpaid, although policemen do put their lives on the line. And you know why they say that about policemen. They all hate getting tickets. LOL

I have MANY friends (and relatives) that are police officers and/or in corrections, including some "kids" that I trained and are now ready to retire; let me ask one question: "HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?"
OK, let's give the police ALL they ask for... it would also help if they would respond to the poorer neighborhoods with the same courtesy they give people in the more affluent neighborhoods, and respond with the same speed, or treat people in poorer neighborhoods with the same degree of respect and courtesy as they treat those in more affluent neighborhoods, instead of coming in like thugs and bullies! Should they get paid for sleeping at night in squad cars in certain neighborhoods? How about the discounts they receive from all merchants (and if they don't, the merchants get an extraordinary share of inspections and fines)? They go past red lights EVEN when they're not in pursuit of anyone or have any emergencies or they part in bus stops when they're on coffee breaks or out ot lunch...? What, they're above the same laws they're paid to enforce? Aren't you also forgetting about the benefits that also count as money? Let's take some of those benefits away and give to them in pay...!
But, wait, what about our other "heroes" (the word "hero" has really been overused and has lost some of its meaning as of late), the Firefighters who are also going to follow with the fact that they, too, risk their lives and perform highly hazardous jobs without weapons! They don't put out fires every day... they sleep more on the job and engage in hobbies and sleep and have a grand old time...! C'mon, anyone remember the scandals here in NYC not so long ago with the whores that were partying in fire stations? They won't mention the great benefits they get, will they?
Then, let's not forget teachers... never mind that many can't even communicate in Standard American English, can't communicate with the kids they pretend to "teach" (blaming parents who are not the PAID educators)? Standards have been lowered for teachers to the point where our kids are failing drastically because our teachers can't teach, let alone educate or inspire learning! The educational field is rotting with deadbeats and political cronies being paid for their malfeasance and ineptitude, can't be fired although they have been delinquent with their duties for YEARS... ). Imagine, they get paid for the summer vacation plus all the holidays the kids have, not to mention all the personal free time off!
Oh, let's not forget our lazy, stupid, rude and arrogant Civil Servants working in offices... it takes them a week to type a letter and another week to get it mailed! Wow... half the time they don't know much more than when it's time to go to lunch and quitting time at the end of the day and how many paid holidays they get every year... yeah, they'll want a raise, too. Do they ever answer telephones (without rudeness?)
Let's get real. How about a bit of accountability? How about getting rid of deadbeats BEFORE talking about a raise! How about EARNING a raise? Get rid of the corruption and then let's talk about a raise!
AND if you have to work two jobs it's YOUR FAULT for not living within your means! Why do you spend so much on your car loans and mortgage when you simply don't earn enough to cover those expenses! Hey, if I can't afford a new Cadillac and a mansion... either I work two jobs or I don't get them, right? What makes YOU think you deserve more than you're earning? Learn to live within the means your pay lets you live like the rest of us!
You remind me of the ghetto kids with $180 sweaters, $200 sneakers (and they usually own 3 or 4 pairs) and a huge plasma TV in every room, an expensive stereo system, all the latest CDs and they live on Food Stamps! Don't get in debt with those things you can't afford to pay!
Go work with Well Fargo; they pay a little better and you don't have to deal with the "criminal minded," as you say. If YOU give respect, you'll get respect! I used to get paid to teach and I taught for the lousy money I was paid... I did my job and never bitched, and was always assigned classes no one else wanted.
Guess what? I'm responsible for more kids getting into colleges, the police department, medical schools and dental schools, than all of the combined teachers in the department I worked in yet they got all easier jobs and more pay... and they were a bunch of near illiterates! I did NOT complain; I did my job.
EDITED: Is being a police officer your ONLY option in life? YOU have an alternative: quit and pursue a higher paying job and stop your whining! What about NURSES who are underpaid in consideration of all the hours they put in and all the life and death stress they deal with every single minute of their work tour? Try putting on a military uniform and getting paid what THEY get paid in Iraq and Afghanistan and then come back and tell me about being underpaid!
You exaggerate your "dangers" and "stress" in order to get a raise... BE REAL! How about the deadbeats in uniform, talk about them! What about the "Blue Wall of Silence"? How about the missing monies when cash is taken into evidence (the same amount never reaches the evidence room)?
HOLD IT. Hold it a minute.... you come off as far too immature to be a police officer... are you some kid writing for the sake of getting attention? YOU are not a police officer! You don't even know what you're talking about. Go away kid!
