a friend at work was telling me about a recipe he had when he took his son to boy scout camp. it was made with an orange and some biquick, and you put the batter back in the hollowed out orange, wrap in foil, and bake in the camp fire. does anyone know the specifics of this recipe so i can have a written copy?

I don't think boy scouts would taste very good in an orange cake. I can't imagine eating a Boy Scout Orange Cake.

CAKE IN AN ORANGE

1 orange per person (orange with thick skin)
1 white, yellow, orange or spice cake mix (Jiffy cake mix works well)
Heavy aluminum foil

Cut the orange in half and eat out the insides, being very careful not to rip or tear the orange skin or "cup". Mix the cake up according to the box directions and fill one of the halves 3/4 full. Cover the mix with the other half and wrap up in foil. Cook in a bed of coals for about 15 minutes (allow more time the colder the weather).

they could attempt cooking food from diverse countries. Why no longer bypass to the library borrow some books with recipes from all over the area. this way they could learn what scouts from all over the area eat. some thing scouts practice dinner in Australia at the same time as camping out is damper. that's no longer a "meal" notwithstanding it is going to fill them up. Self raising flour pinch of salt and sufficient water to make right into a dough. their are some strategies to practice dinner it would want to you construct a hearth? if so get them to bypass outdoors and are available across a thick stick and wrap the dough round it. Then they practice dinner it over the fireplace (extra the coals than the fireplace) turning it often. It takes 10-15 min. to practice dinner. Then decrease it open and placed on butter and jam. My youngsters love doing this and each and every time we bypass camping out jointly the position fires are allowed they make this. yet in a unique way is to spray some foil with cooking oil and wrap the dough in it and placed it contained in the coals or put in the oven till you may tap it and it sounds hollow. it would want to take about an 40 min. this way although and not in any respect as relaxing. click on the link less than for a lot of serious thoughts

Mom has it right- except few of us actually followed a recipe. You can also boil/bake/scramble eggs this way, although a mostly hollowed onion works better for eggs! (Peel off the blackened outer layers and eat like a muffin!)

Besides playing with the flavor of the mix, you can also do things like add in chocolate chips, peanut butter, coconut, nuts, etc. Most of our guys liked sprinkles baked in!

NOTE- it is REALLY easy to underestimate the heat of the fire! When in doubt, use cooler temps. If the thing is a little underdone, it is tastier than if it is burnt and you can always put it back in for another minute.
