I can only answer about the first bout. Dempsey hadn't fought in years and felt he couldn't go the whole 15 because of the long layoff.

I am not certain but I think all championship fights were only 10 rounds in ancient times

Only 10 rounds? I know you never boxed. Ten rounds is plenty!
Try 4 rounds some day and you can answer your own question.
My pro record is only 4-1. Last being a six rounder.
22 professional rounds was enough for me.
