At Thanksgiving, my mother politely asked if my sister's large dog could go somewhere other than under the dining room table during the meal. The dog is very large and it's difficult to comfortably put one's feet under the table. Also, the dog has a tendency to lick people's crotches. My brother in law said that the dog likes to sit under the table, and did nothing, so my mom moved to the children's table. Then the dog followed her to that table.

I was pretty offended by his my brother-in-law's behavior and I thought he was showing a ot of disrepect to his guest, his mother-in-law and someone who had come a long way for this meal. Is this my problem?

The easiest way to solve this problem is to offer to host the next holiday at your own home (or Moms). If Brother-in-law asks to bring the dog, say no!

Yes you are right, that was very rude and inconsiderate of your sister and brother in law. Some people have pets in their houses, but when having a dinner party the pets need to go out in the back yard until company leaves. That's just showing that you have good manners.

No, your brother-in-law was very rude and inconsiderate, but then so was your sister for not coming to your mom's defense & insisting that the dog be put somewhere else. I would have a talk with her if I were you so she can apologize to her guests & especially your mom & make sure it doesn't happen again.
When you invite guests to your home it is your responsibility to make sure they are as comfortable as possible, even if they are family. Your sister & brother-in-law need some lessons on good manners.

You were at your sister's house. Her house, her rules. Even though it was insensative. Mom was right to move but, when the dog moved too sis should have taken control of her dog. No sense getting upset and having a feud. (Thanksgiving was months ago)
Don't go there next year.
Just because a person has a pet does not mean that the home is dirty or the pet is not well groomed and causes a health hazard. I've known pets that are cleaner than some humans.

I don't think the dinner table on a holiday is really a place for a dog...thats nasty (especially the beggers..ewe!)
My mom has two large dogs that get put in their box at supppertime....everynight! Your sister, being the host, should have put the dog in it's box or room to accomodate her GUESTS....people will stop coming if the host continues to invite people and not accomodate them...it's kinda like hosting a dinner party and asking your guests to clean the kitchen when you're done...you just don't do it!

I think it's time to have Thanksgiving dinner somewhere else from now on.
No matter how good the food is there, it's impossible to enjoy a meal with the atmosphere you described.
Your brother-in-law is a "bad dog."

I would leave. That is why, even if I go to another relative's house for Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Dinner, etc., I always cook my own dinner at home anyway. So if I don't feel like going or I get into an argument, or just don't like the vibe, I can go home and enjoy myself in my OWN HOUSE!!!!!

Yes, it may get quite annoying and I am sorry for that. It's nothing to be embarrassed about and I'm sure a whole bunch of people would feel the same way as you. I agree that it is disrespectful.

I would be annoyed, i hate dogs begging at the table. I trained my Great Danes not to do that by feeding them when i eat. There head is higher than my table top.

His house, his dog , his rude manners, your sister should have handled this, if her husband does not have decent manners ask her to do something next time.
