Contrary to popular belief,
The seven deadly sins of the christian church are: greed, pride, envy, anger, gluttony, lust, and sloth. Satanism advocates indulging in each of these 'sins' as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification.
A Satanist knows there is nothing wrong with being greedy, as it only means that he wants more than he already has. Envy means to look with favor upon the possession of others, and to be desirous of obtaining similar things for oneself. Envy and greed are the motivating forces of ambition--and without ambition, very little of any importance would be accomplished.
Gluttony is simply eating more than you need to keep yourself alive. When you have overeaten to the point of obesity, another 'sin'--pride--will motivate you to regain an appearance that will renew your self-respect.
Anyone who buys an article of clothing for a purpose other than covering his body and protecting it from the elements is guilty of pride. Satanists often encounter scoffers who maintain that labels are not necessary. It must be pointed out to these destroyers of labels that one or many articles they themselves are wearing are not necessary to keep them warm. There is not a person on this earth who is completely devoid of ornamentation. The Satanist points out that any ornamentation of the scoffer's body shows that he, too, is guilty of pride. Regardless of how verbose the cynic may be in his intellectual description of how free he is, he is still wearing the elements of pride.
Being reluctant to get up in the morning is to be guilty of sloth, and if you lie in bed long enough you may find yourself commiting yet another sin--lust. To have the faintest stirring of sexual desire is to be guilty of lust. In order to insure the propagation of humanity, nature made lust the second most powerful instinct, the first being self-preservation. Realizing this, the Christian Church made fornication the 'Original Sin.' In this way they made sure no one would escape sin. Your very state of being is as a result of sin--the Original Sin!
The strongest instinct in every living thing is self-preservation, which brings uo to the last of the seven deadly sins--anger. Is it not our instinct for self-preservation that is aroused when someone harms us, when we become angry enough to protect ourselves from further attack? A Satanist practices the motto 'If a man smite thee on one cheek, smash him on the other!' Let no wrong go unredressed. Be as a lion in the path-be dangerous even in defeat!"
This is taken directly from the Satanic Bible, chapter 3 page 46. Anton Szandor LaVey is the original founder of the first Church of Satan and these are but some of his words. As i read the book thoroughly, i found quite a bit of it interesting as much of it contradicts what the Christian Church would have you believe a Satanist really is. But what ruined the book for me personally was the last few chapters on rituals of/and magic. Now, i am a man of science so i don't believe in such things but for those who do, you may very well be delighted with what you read. The funny thing is that the book tells you more than once that it does not condone, nor do Satanists practice habitually, rituals of human sacrafice.
The rituals contained within are akin to 'voodoo' and the like in that you do certain things in front of an alter such as chime a bell and whatnot, and then you 'pray' for certain things such as better fortune or karma if you will on one that has wronged you or a loved one.
The whole premise of the book is that man is not much different than the animals we dominate. Our basic instincts and drives are what helped us to populate the earth and we should not try to now separate ourselves from those instincts.
Of course, you may be thinking that this is barbaric, but if you do infact read this book you will note, as per further reading of the 'sins', that if all of man kept himself to the seven sins, much of the wrong that plagues the woprld would be very much avoided.
Pride seems to be praised alot as it seems to be the sin that keeps the others in check. Your pride won't let you get fat, be lazy, sleep around, hurt others unnecessarily out of anger, or envy others too much because if you do then it will motivate you to work harder to achieve the things you do envy.
I gave this book 5 stars because it contains ALOT that has been hidden, twisted and made to be misinformed to those unaware. And though i would have given it four stars because of its parts on ritual magic, i realize that my personal beliefs do not matter when offering this review to others.
Pretty much, it is the same as Christianity, with Lucifer/Satan (he has many names in the book) taking the place of Jesus as the angel of knowledge. And where Christianity focuses more on submissive compassion, Satanism focuses more on confident and real expectations in our every day world.
It doesn't harp on the notion that if everyone becomes a Satanist then this world would be at last with peace for it says that world peace is quite impossible simply because of our primal instincts. And that, as it presents itself, is the way it should be; just as in all of nature.
Nor does it tell you to go around forcing your way to get what you want. The 'if a man smite you one one cheek, smash him on the other' mantra is only a metaphor not to be taken literally. It is meant to represent the confidence one is supposed to have in themselves to achieve what they desire and not let others impose upon them as they do the same.
In addition- there are different churches of Satan- there's a greed, lust etc. Depending on what the Satanists chosen endulged sin is.
THEY DON'T WORSHIP SATAN. PEOPLE WHO WORSHIP SATAN/LUCIFER ARE CALLED LUCIFERIANS.
So many ignorant people confuse the two.
By the way, I'm not a Satanist, I'm a Buddhist, I just respect other religions.

I got most of this info from Wikipedia, but it seems accurate for the most part. Enjoy.
LaVeyan Satanism
[edit] Fundamental individualism
Satanism is often mistaken as being a religion that encourages cruelty and irresponsible behaviour, but LaVey's brand is very different. Central is the idea inherited from Nietzsche that an individual must enforce his own meaning on life and rise above the perceived conformity of the masses. The Satanist is seen as equivalent to Nietzsche's Übermensch; LaVey claimed "Satanists are born, not made" and that "[Satanists] have a disease called independence that needs to be recognised just like alcoholism." There is a libertarian element here; diversity is encouraged, everyone is expected to discover their own sexuality, chart their own personality, and decide their own ambitions in life. In this stress on individuality, Satanism is considered a "Left-Hand Path" religion.
[edit] Satanism and self-transformation
Adherents to "life-denying" religions are often regarded as self-abnegating in their devotion to their own servility. LaVey's Satanic creed viewed religion as promoting an impersonal relationship with what the churches referred to as "God". Satanism was presented as an opportunity to self-identify with one's own concept of God. Great attention was paid to details gleaned from Noir films like White Heat and The Big Sleep in creating one's ideal Self from deliberately invoked forms. Satanism encourages a follower of the religion to grow throughout their life as they see fit.
[edit] The Satanic Golden Rule
Lex talionis, the Law of Retaliation (lex/legis f. nom, "law" and talio/talionis f. gen, "retaliation, returning like unto like") informed much of LaVey's Satanic formulation. "Do unto others as they do unto you" supplanted the directive to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", so that you are only to give compassion and sympathy to those who deserve it. It is a reactive rule, compared with the Christian proactive rule; by the rule, love, compassion, and sympathy are not to be wasted upon "ingrates"; these are to be given only to those who the practitioner feels deserves them. The religion of Satanism, as LaVey espouses it, is centered almost exclusively upon the concept of being one's own god; as such, values and attachments such as love, affection, and caring, along with opposing concepts such as hate and wrath, are to be disseminated at the discretion of the individual Satanist. LaVey felt that intelligent and strong people spent too much time caring for psychic vampires — weak individuals who always demanded attention and care, yet would never give any back. He taught that Satanists should strive to remove themselves as much as possible from such people in order to live in accordance to their instincts and individual wills.
[edit] God in Satanism
Satanists do not believe that Satan is a god, rather the function of God is performed and satisfied by the Satanist him/herself. That is, the needs of worship, ritual, and religious/spiritual focus are directed, effectively, inwards towards the Satanist, as opposed to outwards, towards God.
LaVey proposes instead that as all gods are creations of man, worship of an external deity is worship of its creator by proxy. He suggests, then, that the rational Satanist should instead internalize his god, and therefore worship himself; hence the Satanic maxim, "I am my own god."
It follows that Satanism shuns the idea of belief in all other deities as well, including, to the surprise of many, Satan. Satan is viewed as a literary archetype, along the lines of John Milton's epic hero. This archetype is viewed not as a negative figure, but as a positive image of pride and mastery in opposition to servitude, faith, and humility.
Belief in any such externalized deities is generally considered grounds for excluding someone as a Satanist, and devil worship in particular is considered nothing more than a misguided inversion of Christianity.
[edit] The Nine Satanic Statements
Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!
Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!
Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!
Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates!
Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!
Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!
Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all!
Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!
Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as it has kept it in business all these years![3]
[edit] The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth
Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
Do not harm little children.
Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.[4]
[edit] The Nine Satanic Sins
Stupidity—The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.
Pretentiousness—Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn’t applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone’s made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.
Solipsism—Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.” It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.
Self-deceit—It’s in the “Nine Satanic Statements” but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it’s fun, and with awareness. But then, it’s not self-deceit!
Herd Conformity—That’s obvious from a Satanic stance. It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.
Lack of Perspective—Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints—know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.
Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies—Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it’s something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.
Counterproductive Pride—That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you’ve painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.
Lack of Aesthetics—This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasing—it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.[5]
[edit] Magic
Magic, as defined by Satanism, is "the change in situations or events in accordance with one's will, which would, using normally accepted methods, be unchangeable." This definition incoporates two kinds of magic: Lesser Magic (manipulative) and Greater Magic (ritual). Satanism, however, draws no distinction between White and Black magic which correlates with its view of an impersonal universe.[6]
[edit] Lesser Magic
Lesser Magic is a system of manipulation that mainly involves three main themes of sex, sentiment, and wonder. On this point, Anton LaVey seems to take inspiration from a book on photography called The Command to Look. Lesser magic capitalizes on these themes, prompting Satanists to expand on whichever themes they naturally fall under.
LaVey later expanded his system of manipulation in The Satanic Witch. The book is mainly written for a woman's use, but many concepts are ambiguous in their usage. He relates ideas worked out from watching the proprieters of carnival stalls and fortune tellers in their manipulation of customers. The Satanic Witch also proposes The LaVey Synthesizer Clock, a form of somatyping that adds a fourth body type, the "feminine." The synthesizer is used in identification of personality in order to know how best to manipulate a person.
[edit] Greater Magic
Greater Magic involves ritual and ceremony in order to focus one's emotional energy for a specific purpose. Satanic ritual is highly variable, with a basic format given in The Satanic Bible. Satanists are encouraged to use whatever elements that suit them in order to bring them to an emotional height. It must be noted that the Church of Satan claims that a better mastery of Lesser Magic will contribute to a better mastery of Greater Magic.
The ritual room is referred to as an "intellectual decompression chamber." Disbelief is temporarily suspended and the magician is encouraged to best express themself and not hold back on what they may be feeling. Also, it is notable that Satanism draws a line at the participants, stating that a successful working is more likely with a few Satanists who are concentrated on what they are doing than many who may be distracted.
Greater magic is most commonly divided into three categories: destruction, lust, and compassion. Each is considered a basic motivation for all actions and Satanic ritual is said to fall into these three categories. LaVey elaborates on methods for focusing these motivations. For destruction, one can either act out or destroy a person symbolically in order to vent their anger and hatred. Lust rituals involve masturbation and orgasmic overtones. Compassion rituals concern sadness and crying is encouraged. Overall, full self expression is encouraged in Satanic ritual.
Much emphasis is placed on evocation and music. The last part of The Satanic Bible is dedicated to invocations and the nineteen Enochian Keys, originally written by John Dee. Music is encouraged because it is said to easily manipulate one's emotions which contributes to the overall success of the rituals.
[edit] The Black Mass
The "Black Mass", a symbolic opposition of the church used in the past, but are not used in the current day by Satanists, as Anton LaVey explained in an interview with Occult America.[7]
"He did not, however, go along with the dramatization of evil as performed in the original Black Mass. “Those,” he explained, “were psychodramas at a time when people needed them. They had to express their opposition, their rebellion against an established church. Our rituals are suitably modified to express the needs of our particular era.”
Anton LaVey stated in The Satanic Bible (The chapter in the Book of Lucifer called The Black Mass):
"The usual assumption is that the Satanic ceremony or service is always called a black mass. A black mass is not the magical ceremony practiced by Satanists. The Satanist would only employ the use of a black mass as a form of psychodrama. Furthermore, a black mass does not necessarily imply that the performers of such are Satanists. A black mass is essentially a parody of the religious service of the Roman Catholic Church, but can be loosely applied to a satire on any religious ceremony."
LaVey went on to call it a redundancy, and it is commonly misinterpreted that the Church of Satan has performed actual Black Masses, however using baby-fat candles and kissing the devil's buttocks (both are common practices outlined in the chapter) would be both contradictory and hypocritical for a Satanist to do. In the 1950s Anton LaVey held a magic circle, or coven, at his home for a charge before the legendary event of shaving his head and announcing Anno Satanas. Afterwards, the prominent members of The Church of Satan held 'High Mass' on Friday nights at The Black House, as verified in the Occult America interview aforementioned. The videos and articles of the rituals and Satanic Marriage performed there are legendary.
[edit] Satanic holidays
The most important holiday in Satanism is one's own birthday, as it is the birthdate of one's own god. This is as a reminder that to a Satanist, you are the most important being in the universe, and to honor your own vital existence and your life. LaVey recommends that a Satanist celebrate his own birthday in any way he chooses, with as much pomp and ceremony as he sees fit. The Satanic celebration of the birthday can also be seen as a mockery of the holidays commemorating the birth of various gods or saints in other religions.
Satanic holidays are named by Anton LaVey in The Satanic Bible but are not considered sacred.
Chief among these holidays is Walpurgisnacht, which in addition to the occult significance the date carries, also marks the formation of the Church of Satan in the year 1966, or I Annos Satanas. This date is commonly celebrated by Satanists with private or group rituals, and private parties or family celebrations to commemorate the foundation of the Church of Satan.
LaVey also mentions the summer and winter solstices, and the spring and fall equinoxes as lesser holidays. These are likewise often celebrated by ritual or private party; however, they are sometimes also used to substitute popular holidays that Satanists wish to avoid imparting a Christian overtone to but still wish to celebrate in some form.
Halloween is very commonly celebrated by Satanists, but typically there is far less occult significance attached to the date by Satanists than the public might imagine. Halloween is a popular date for both private and group ritual ceremonies, but also a popular date for Satanists to hold private parties for no other purpose than the enjoy the dark fun that is commonly celebrated on that date by the public at large. If anything, Satanists seem to take a sense of irony and humor in the holiday.
Satanism does not specifically forbid the celebration of any holidays or festivals held by other cultures or even other religions. Entirely secular holidays are commonly celebrated by Satanists either for personal reasons or merely as an excuse to have a good time. It is not entirely uncommon for Satanists to even celebrate overtly Christian holidays such as Christmas, though the religious trappings are generally stripped from the holiday, secularizing it. Many Satanists, however, either transfer such holidays as Christmas to the Winter Solstice and either place a darker spin on it or secularize it entirely, or decline to celebrate such holidays altogether.
Of recent note, June 6th, 2006 marked a Satanic High Mass in Hollywood, California by the Church of Satan. This celebration was by invitation only and limited to 100 attendees, and was held in large part to mock the superstitious fear of the date by the public. The date 06/06/06 does not hold special religious significance in Satanism, nor does the number 666. The event was documented, and many members of the Church of Satan were interviewed, by the BBC with permission.
Theistic Satanism:
Theistic Satanism
There are several different kinds of Satanism, and there are many kinds of Satanists. Some follow a path of theistic Satanism, which means that they believe in the actual existence of Satan as a spiritual being. To a theist, Satan is a real, sentient, active force in the universe, who has always been part of humanity, and known by many names in many cultures around the world.
Satanism is approached with a spiritual view, and is experienced through ritual, meditation and other practices of spirituality. It is more of a traditional kind of path, as compared to more, "modern" forms of Satanism, like LaVey Satanism. Theism differs from LaVey Satanism in many ways. The LaVey Satanist is essentially an atheist, and does not believe in the existence of magick or demons or gods. Aitheistic, or branches of Modern or LaVeyan Satanism, are more of a glorified, earthly kind of here-and-now approach to life in general. Generally they use ritual magick for psychological reasons. They deny the existence of an afterlife and believe that man is God.
The main aspect of satanism is that the participant is able to choose thier own way of expression, and is not bound by religious dictate, law, or duty. The path of Spiritual Satanism is the path of the self. A Theistic Satanist seeks to know the self, above all else. This is the essence of individualism. We take the choice of Left Hand Path, out of free will. It is a personal choice to be satanic. It is up to the satanist, esentially to define what is really satanic to them. This means that the satanist is also accountable for what they do; they take responsibilities for thier actions.
Some Theists use a variety of beliefs within their studies and practices, such as Egyptian Sumerian or other ancient religions. Most Traditional satanists study the mythology of the Dark Gods that have existed throughout many culture's histories. There is not one right and true path, as there are many ways to express satanism. The Theistic satanist may or may not believe in the existence or purpose of an afterlife, as this is a matter of personal choice.
Both paths afford the satanist the room to be free, and to be expressive in their own way. Theistic and Modern are just labels to describe the type of thinking that a satanist may embrace. The kind of tendencies that they may or may not uphold, depend on the spiritual model that one embraces. Individualism can afford you many opportunities. It is a chance to see the world in a different light, to approach life according to how you see fit, without fear or guilt. You may ask, then, why call it Satanism? This is only a label by which one can describe those who are compelled by darkness, and those who are interested in the Left-Hand Path. There are very few religions or methods by which this can be done, and satanism seems to be the most popular method today.
"Satanism is a religion of the flesh, the mundane, the carnal - all of which are ruled by Satan, the personification of the Left Hand Path" The Satanic Bible, Book Of Lucifer 3:paragraph 30
Eliphas Levi Used this illustration to describe the difference between the right and left hand paths of magick. The right hand path is the path where spirit is more important than matter or material things, and the left hand path represents the material that is more important than the spirit. This was a common trend of thought for those who saw the material life as 'sinful', or evil. This type of left and right thinking encouraged people to obey what was considered to be right or wrong, accoding to laws. The Left hand and right hand paths are also represented in the qabalah as the pillars of Mercy or Severity.
Anton LaVey explains his understanding of the system here in this quote: "the right-hand pillar was associated the qualities of mildness, love and mercy. The presence of evil in the universe was explained as arising from entities associated with the left hand pillar, left hand side, or simply sitra ahra (the other side). The doctrine which gradually developed saw the source of evil in the superabundant growth of the left-hand side through its separation from the restraining and offsetting influence of the right-hand side. From this unnatural imbalance resulted a domain of dark emanations and demonic powers, which were not a natural part of the organic whole, but were a cancerous like growth."
Left hand and right hand are also used to describe a way of religion or philosophy. The majority of right hand religions make their followers subservient to thier power or being. Christianity is an example of this, as a monotheistic religion which requires a humble, subservient attitude of their followers. In contrast, a left-hand path religion would most likely encourage the practitioner to use their own, inner powers of being or spirituality. The LHP practitioner is often seen as a god, or has 'god-like' abilities within. This is because the satanists realises that the power to change the world lies within, not from some external diety-worship. Worship of demons or god(-forms) is usually reserved for a special circumstance, such as a tribute.
The Left-Hand path belief is generally, self-serving. The needs of the practicioner outweigh the benefit of helping others. Personal interests are the main objetive and the satanic magickan can be direct in obtaining thier goals. They work with the forces of chaos, death or destruction. In comaprison, a right-hand path religion would work to serve others needs, by working to use harmonic forces, or healing magicks.
Since the satanist does not obey what is considered to be right or wrong, they have willfully and personally made the choice to live life without the burden of "sin". The Satanist is not a sheep in the fold to be herded into what is considered and called right by those who would impose thier religious authority. They are like the wolf who decides for the self what is right, and takes the weak of the fold to feed his desire. That is not evil, it is the way of nature.
Luciferianism
Luciferianism
Luciferianism can be understood best as a belief system that venerates the essential characteristics that are affixed to Lucifer.
Luciferianism is often identified as an auxiliary of Satanism, due to the canonical identification of Lucifer with Satan. Some Luciferians accept this identification or consider Lucifer as the light bearer aspect of Satan, and thus could properly be called Satanists. Others reject it, arguing that Lucifer is a more positive ideal than Satan. They are inspired by the ancient myths of Egypt, Rome and Greece, Gnosticism and traditional western occultism.
There are several different viewpoints on how Luciferianism is defined. These include:
Religious/Traditional Luciferianism
Spiritual/Gnostic Luciferianism
Philosophic Luciferianism
Modern Luciferianism
Religious/Traditional Luciferianism
Main article: Theistic Satanism
This is the view that Lucifer is a living deity, and is worshipped as such. Lucifer is usually equated with Satan and there is really no difference between this philosophy and theistic Satanism.
Spiritual/Gnostic Luciferianism
Spiritual Luciferianism has its roots in the esoteric teachings of Western Occultism and Hermeticism. This view holds that, while Satan represents the manifestation of the Material Realm, Lucifer represents the highest spiritual ideal, one's true Will, the Holy Guardian Angel, etc. As all “material” things are energy or light, Lucifer is seen as the creating force of the universe, ever present. Spiritual Luciferianism is more of a branch of Hermeticism than Satanism, having little or nothing to do with the latter. Magical practices are mostly influenced by Roger Williamson and Aleister Crowley.
Various Gnostic Luciferian sects that emphasize the dualism of the universe have also been associated with the image of Lucifer, in the root sense of the "bringer of light". The orthodox view has associated Lucifer with "Satan before the fall", though, as Bishop Lucifer Calaritanus's name attests, Lucifer was not yet associated with "Satan" in the 4th century. Some classically-educated Free Masons used "luciferian" in the scholarly sense of "bringing enlightenment," invoking Prometheus who stole fire from the gods to bring to man. Pro-Catholic polemicists linked such Masonic usage with sects worshiping Lucifer, which have had persistent groups of followers since the Middle Ages.
Philosophical Luciferianism
Luciferianism is the embodiment of knowledge that acknowledges the Principles of Lucifer as the "Light of Conscious Evolution". As a god or as a principle, Lucifer is the "Light Bearer". The Light which illuminates the consciousness of sapient beings and heightens the senses and awareness to experience Higher Levels of Being. Luciferianism is the path of Self-Attainment, the Higher Self. It is the Centered Path, neither Left nor Right, for Lucfier is the Star that shines in the morning and evening, that point of light between opposing forces.
Modern Luciferianism
Main article: Satanism
Modern Luciferianism and Modern Satanism share many primary aspects. In both, practitioners self-identify with a super-personal essence that they view as embodying desirable characteristics. Both work towards employing these characteristics as a means of bettering the Self. However, these two groups differ in that Modern Satanists, particularly younger ones, are believed to actively engage in the sinister or diabolical aspects traditionally associated with the biblical Satan due to criticism received by people who do not know a great deal about Satanism. It is therefore incorrect that crimes, such as child kidnapping, human sacrifices, vandalism, and so forth, are committed by true Satanists. Contrary to popular belief, many Luciferians and Satanists alike do not worship the devil, but rather worship nothing except the divinity within themselves.
Extraterrestrial-based Luciferianism
It is considered by some Luciferians that Lucifer is the name of an extraterrestrial entity, or perhaps race of entities, that exists outside of our awareness and that also genetically manipulated early primates, thereby creating the human race.[citation needed]
Followers of Lucifer Calaritanus
"Luciferians" described a schismatic group named after Lucifer Calaritanus, Bishop of Cagliari, Sardinia in the late 4th century. The movement was linked to the complex political machinations involving the emperor Constantius II and Pope Liberius. Lucifer was a staunch ultra-orthodox opponent of Arius, declared a heretic. The movement died out early in the following century. All that we know of Bishop Lucifer's views derive from the anti-Luciferian polemic of Jerome in the form of a dialogue, Altercatio Luciferiani et orthodoxi ("Altercation of the Luciferian and the orthodox").
Luciferian Orders
Structured systems that are fundamentally Luciferian are exceedingly rare. The Children of the Black Rose are a long-time Luciferian order who view Lucifer as a Supreme being encompassing all; "everything and nothing" [1]. This can be compared to the Gnostic deity Abraxas, which is thought to contain both Absolute Good and Evil. A more modern structure inspired by Gnosticism, French occultism, Thelema and the works of Danish Luciferian author Carl William Hansen (Ben Kadosh) and Bishop Michael Bertiaux is the Neo-Luciferian Church. It works within a seven grade church system.
The Ordo Luciferi (Luciferian Order), is an up and coming Order that was originally developed by Lucian Black in 2005. The philosophy of the Luciferian Order is based on that of Intellectual Light, wherein, light is knowledge (consciousness). And through the acquisition of such light may the individual intelligence work to advance his/her own conscious evolution. Luciferians work to evolve their own consciousness to higher states, the Opus Magnum. To ascend from our current Homo-Sapien state to a higher ideal state of Homo-Divinus. The Ordo Luciferi implements a SIX degree non-religious system of recognition for its members. The O:L in no way interferes with ones religious or political opinons, be they what they may. The O:L was designed to serve as a hub for Luciferic Illumination, not for dogmatic discipline. For each conscious point of light within humanity is unique and each sol (sun) must find their own way to the Light that is within them, the O:L offers tools and fraternity with like minded people who seek the god within, the Higher Self.

The name Lucifer is commonly tied to the biblical Satan. However, the name Lucifer does not appear in most versions of the Bible. Lucifer does appear once in the King James version in Isaiah 14:12, in which the King of Babylon is referenced as "Son of the Morning" ["Luci-Fer" in latin] (translated from the Hebrew "Helel ben Shahar," or "Praise! Son of the Dawn"). This is because Lucifer was originally the Latin term for the planet Venus, also known as the morning star. There is no direct link in the Bible between the entity known as "Satan" and the entity known as "Lucifer." This was a myth later created by Augustine after translating the above mentioned text from the original Hebrew into Latin. [citation needed] It was at this time that the story of the "War in Heaven" was created. There is no mention of this myth in any Hebrew document.
It should be noted that in the earliest days of the church, Lucifer was seen as being synonymous with Christ, not Satan. Early Christian parents often named their children Lucifer, as with Lucifer Calaritanus.
