First you need to ask yourself this question, how good are you, do you spend allot of time at the range...at long distance...are you consistent, do you reload.
Nikon and Pentax both make rifle (and some pistol scopes) Scopes. You did not disclose any specs., 3X9x40?, etc. or what series. "Perfect condition" so it is used then I take-it ?
It sounds like a good combination and you should ask sell if you two could go to the range. Price somewhere around $500 give or take a little. A guy I work with is looking at a new combo Ruger M77 in a 243 w/scope for $550.00.
Good luck and I hope this information was helpful. (77)

The rifle scope combination should work fine. But I have to tell you that I'm built about as Joe Average as they come and Ruger rifles don't fit me well. Compare the Ruger against a similar Remington, Browning, and even a Savage. This is simply a subjective thing, but rifle fit is important in order to shoot well.
Pentax make nice enough stuff. I prefer Leupold myself but they are more expensive.
Ruger firearms are barely less than the Remington's and the now out of business Winchesters. A Savage will normally be a bit less expensive. While the Ruger should have acceptable accuracy with most loads, shoot numerous factory load that are designed for the type of game you will hunt in order to find one that accuracy you can live with. For most hunters, that's the magical one inch to an inch and a half at 100 yards.
I would expect you to be looking at $500 to $550 for the rifle but I can't hazard a guess on the scope.
Good luck

My Ruger M 77 Mark 2 in .308 does 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards with my reloads, and I've killed 10 deer so far with that rifle. If you reload, please try the Hornady 150 grain soft point (cat.# 3033) and use Accurate 2015 powder. I safely get 2900 feet per second with that bullet/powder combo, and it's accurate. I have 3 Ruger 77s , a .223, a .308, and a 300 Winchester Magnum, bought them new for about $400 each and put scopes on them myself. I can't say how much the Pentax scope is worth without knowing what style it is, but you won't regret buying the Ruger .308.

I use a Pentax scope on my Mossberg 695 slug gun, and I would not hesitate to put it on a quality rifle like the Ruger you are looking at. The eye relief is good, and the optics are clear.
Ruger makes their own barrels, and they do occassionally make a lemon, but most will shoot around 1-1.5" groups at 100 yards (that's pretty good). Their guns are a good value, with quality wood and metal-working.
Honestly though, I haven't priced Rugers in years. I'd place a good price range at about 350 to 500 dollars for the set, depending partially on the quality of the rings and mounts on it. By the way, if it comes with Ruger integral rings, those are quality rings.

That rifle in .308, will probably shoot as well as you ever do.
Pentax makes good to outstanding scopes, and dependinbg on the model, might have huge bearing on cost of combo. Some of the better lightseeker models can run upwards of $1000 dollars. So if the asking price seems outrageous, find out what scope is on the rifle. Most dealers would remove/swap out/etc... the scope for you on something higher end. Good luck

I only have one 77, and it needed a little work on the forend wood but it's a sweetheart now, and wood problems seem to have become an industry standard lately. I really like the integral mount/scope ring set-up on the 77. Pentax is well-known for its cameras and produces an array of inexpensive-to-moderately priced scopes, so you'll want to know which particular scope it is before you can take a stab at a reasonable price.

This is an exellent bolt action rifle, and caliber and is very accurate. It has a real smooth [bolt] action.I've heard of Pentax but have never had one.
If it's clear it should be ok. This set-up probably cost $600-$700 new. My guess would be $350-$375 would be a good deal

i have the 308, it shoots as good as the shooter can, if you use quality ammo, clean it and practice, you will be happy,
for price i can't say. to many variables, does the person need money? but 500.00 would be good. scope and rifle, go from there, down preferably

Yes, they are both good. The rifle is as accurate as you are. I didn't know you had a choice as to how much you should pay for a rifle? Then I've always paid way 'too much.' LOL!
I don't know, offer then $400 and see what happens.
