I cook steak or hamburger, using my skillet, on the stove top. Even when I use the vent/fan, there still is some smoke that causes teh sensitive smoke detector to go off on occassion. I live in an apartment building so I can't disconnect or move the smoke detector. Any sugestions?

quit burning the food! lol just kidding. Mine does that to. Try putting some saran wrap on it before you cook, and open a door or window slightly. Just dont forget to take the wrap off when you are done-leave the saran box on the counter to remind yourself

No, that isn't normal. Only smoke will set off the alarm, so something in or on the stove has to be smoking when it heats up. Are the heating elements and catch-plates under them perfectly clean. Raise the entire top of the stove and see if it's clean under the burners. If there are small pieces of spattered or spilled food in them, the heat will make them smoke and activate the smoke detector. Old grease on them will do the same thing. Also, check the oven and the drip pan underneath to make sure that they are very clean. Any old residue will also smoke when heated up. Keep in mind that some smoke isn't always easily visible; you have to really look for it.

Oh my goodness, when you find the answer, please let me know! Our smoke detector does the same thing, and it's on the other side of the house. We have to shut those doors and open windows. Your smoke detector is really old and probably has a lot of dust in it, making it more sensitive. You could either open it and blow the dust out wiht pressurized air, or just get a new smoke detector. We tried the first, but probably have to do the second now.

Make sure that there is nothing on the burner to smoke. Scrub it with a little baking soda then rinse a lot. Try cooking your meat at a slightly lower temperature for longer that may help with the smoke. The best thing to do then is to cover the detector with plastic and make sure you duct tape it to the wall so no smoke can get to it.

A fireman will tell you to wave a towel at it and it works for about five seconds. I use to just take the battery out until the air cleared. Since then I've bought a detector that has a delay button. Push the button and for the next 15 minutes it's off and resets itself after that way it's not dangerous if you forgett

Could be your smoke alarm is too close to your stove. Sometimes even steam will set it off. Make sure your stove is clean also.
