I was told to push something, f10 f12 or one of the function buttons, but I cant remember which one. Help!

Turn off your machine and watch the screen when it starts. If your machine has a restore partition on it, the start up will show you which function key to use.

Without the CD, you can try to find the product key through the following link:
WinXP: http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/prodid.php
With this, you could try to contact MS, explain the situation, they might let you download. Can't hurt to try.

Go to microsoft.com and download a windows xp service pack and that should work
