We will eventually be upgrading to an HDTV package, but in the meantime, just want to get a signal so we can watch it until we get the upgrade. Any help is appreciated.

depends on what input you are using you may have go in and label which input you are using so tv will reconize it and make it active

Find the connector that gives you the best signal. HDMI, component, S-video, composite, RF, in decreasing order of quality. Of course, it all depends on what your old DirecTV receiver is capable of putting out, qualitywise.
