The card and the Account would still be working but really have some doubts if you have any ATM of HDFC abroad.

The bank probably has a cross-collateralization agreement built into it's terms of account. This means that your friend agreed that all his accounts at the bank will serve as collateral for all other accounts at that bank. Any specific agreement between your friend and the bank takes priority over any general provisions of credit law. (He essentially waived his rights when he signed the account opening agreement.) The account was not opened by his employer because this isn't legal. Your friend had to have signed the account opening agreement himself somewhere during the hiring process.
