I was Mormon for a big chunk of my life and was never really impressed by this religion. I thought of it as more of a cult than a religion. I couldn't get myself to believe that a man named Joesph Smith went to the woods and was told to start a new religion cause none of them were true. From my own experiences with the LDS church I went to most of the people from my church were genuine while others thought they were hollier than thou, but to answer your question

Mormon is a term used to refer to adherents of the Latter Day Saint movement (a group of related religious sects), and most commonly to the movement's original and largest group, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to church history, the term is derived from the Book of Mormon, a religious text that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated from ancient plates containing a history of the early inhabitants of the Americas that was compiled by a prophet called Mormon. Mormons are not Protestants and do not consider themselves part of any larger branch of Christianity, but do consider themselves Christians.

Basic beliefs
When Joseph Smith was asked about the basic beliefs of the church, he summarized the teachings and doctrines in 13 points, known today as The Articles of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Articles of Faith are:

We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

in the 1800's an american named joseph smith said he found golden plates hidden on a hillside in upstate NY. he said he translated them into what is known as the ''book of mormon'' this is the foundation of the mormon church. the church in its early days and its members were persicuted westward across the unitedstates. the leader joseph smith was killed by an angry mob. briggam young took over as head then led the ''saints'' west until they settled in salt lake, utah where the church HQ is to this day. they dont drink or smoke. even caffine use is frowned on. the common myth is that they have more then one wife. this is because there is a very small percentage of people that call themselves mormons that are really the furthest thing from it. the church did at one time condone multiple marriages as a protection against the frontier. it wasnt uncommon for a wife to lose her husband and get stuck running an entire farm and have to take care of the family. if a husband was lost the wives could all pitch in and help one another. that was the reasoning behind it. but again this practice was banned by the real mormon church years ago.

Mormoms believe in the entire Christian bible, old and new testaments alike, they just have an extra bible called the Book of Mormon that they believe in, too. They believe that God appeared to their prophet, Joseph Smith, and told him that He wanted him to restore the religion as it was during the times when the disciples where alive. They believe that in times when there is no one alive who is either in direct confidence with God (such as a prophet or disciple or Jesus) then the church veers off course, with people deciding things about the religion, instead of taking their cues directly from God. That is why they have a prophet at all times, whom they believe to be in contact with God to guide them.

They believe very rigidly in keeping the body as a temple, meaning no alcohol, caffeine, tea, or premarital sex. They are very family orientated, and believe sex to be largely for procreational purposes.

They believe in three levels of heaven- the highest level being for those of the Mormon faith where they will dwell with God, (Celestial Heaven) one for those who are of another Christian faith but have led good lives where they will dwell with Jesus (Terrestial Heaven) and one for those who didn't live under a Christian faith (Telestial Heaven). They believe that until the second coming, those who have not been saved go to a spiritual 'prison', which is where Jesus was (He had been preaching) during the days in which He was dead after having been crucified and before He was ressurected.

They have things called Baptism for the dead, which means someone on earth can elect to be baptised on behalf of someone stuck in that spiritual prison who has decided that they want to be saved after all.

Some branches of the religion did practice polygamy (Plural marriage) a while ago, mainly when war was wiping out much of the male population- they believed it was not right for a woman to be without a husband and since there weren't enough husbands to go around... they shared. Technically speaking, the church outlawed the practice due to pressure from the goverment and general society, but many do still practice polygamy in secret.

Does that help at all?

Mormons are people whom believe that Joseph Smith, the founder of their religion was a prophet. They believe that God was once a mortal man and now resides on a planet near the star Kolob. Their temples are sacred and an ordinary person such as yourself is not allowed in... you can do a search and read more about this religion.

I've lived in Utah for 1 year now and can not wait to leave. Talk about people living in a bubble. I have never seen so many self centered, ignorant people in my life. Speaking of the Mormans here if you didn't figure it out. This is what I've learned:
The ones who have gone on their missions, who you think would be the most caring, are actually the most egotistical judgemental ones. (I am only speaking of the women "sisters") They will try and tell you about their religion, but when you ask a question, you get referred to the website or quoted the same 10/15 beliefs verbatum. They will shut down and try to make up excuses if they feel threatened by anyone that knows too much about their religion. They do baptise the dead, they put their faith in their underwear, sorry, "garments", that protect them from evil things happening to them, and the men get a "secret" name when they are "worthy" enough to get endowded into the Temple. The name which they do not speak of, is given to their wife also so she can go to the same heaven. (Because there are 3 to choose from you know!) You must confess all of your sins to your bishop if you want to go on a mission and after much praying, you or the bishop will recieve an answer from God telling you if you can go on one and where you will be sent. They discourage women from going so they will get married and have lots of children. Women therefore, are not allowed to go until the age of 21. They also are advised not to drink coffee or alcohol(most do drink soda, but for some reason, thats an approved source of caffene) and not to watch rated R movies.
A persons choice of religion has never made a difference to me. After all, with so many to choose from, how do we really know which one is right? By how we were raised? I did much research to try and understand the culture I am living in. In turn, I have found myself in utter disbelief that such a large group of people could be so ignorant!
I am struggling with my own faith since being here. Can such a large group really be wrong? Don't get me wrong here, I would never join the LDS church. I believe they are in direct defiance of the bible. I also would never want to downright critisize soemone for their beliefs, so if you are mormon and reading this, don't take it personally. You have free will to choose what you want to believe. I already know that not all of you are like this. I am speaking of the extreme here! I just don't want anyone who is not LDS to get caught up in the glitz and glamour and join the church. AND, don't give me the website to try and clarify things. I've already been there.

The name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. We believe in the Book of Mormon and we also to believe in the bible as long as it is translated correctly. We also believe that there is life after this world and that we may be able to be with our families again. We also a prophet that leads and guides the church today. Our current prophet is President Gordon B. Hinckley. There is so much more that i could tell you about our church that it would go on and on. So i am going to give you and others a website that you can look at to find out more about The church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. It is http://www.mormon.org/welcome/0,6929,403-1,00.html I hope that you look at this website. Lots of people do not understand our religion and that is why they make fun of us.
I have heard about other religions but there is no way i switch. I have a strong testimony about the church of Jesus Christ of Later-day saints.

The Mormon church teaches that Jesus was born in heaven as the spirit child of Elohim by one of his wives, and Jesus' brother was Lucifer, who became Satan. Jesus is one of many gods. For a thorough explanation of Mormons go to this link. http://www.macgregorministries.org

I don't see that any actual members have answered your question. Our 13 Articles of Faith were listed though, those are correct.
For info, please go to the source.
LDS.org, mormon.org or talk with a member - I would be happy to answer any questions...
Anti sites do nothing but spread lies, misconceptions and hate. Please do not trust their information. Would you ask Nazi's about Jews and take it as fact? I hope not.
Good luck.

It has its origins in 'books' from god written (discovered?) only 200 years ago. No weirder than any other but plenty weird enough.
