"Limewire" is not illegal. It is just a service. However, providing copies of copyrighted material (music, books, software) for others to copy without paying royalties IS illegal unless the copyright holder has given express permission to do so.

"Technically" and as stated on their website, Limewire isn't illegal, it floats somewhere between legality and the latter. If you want to get technical about it, you're basically just sharing files with other people, and thats not illegal. The illegal part comes with the fact that you can get music for free and in bulk, rather than having to pay for it, which is cheating music artists out of their money.

Several other people have answered this question, so I won't go into a lot of detail. But no, Limewire is a program and is not illegal. Downloading software, movies and music without paying for them is illegal. And people who do so are being prosecuted. Check out some of these articles and then decide if you really want to risk it (keeping in mind that you're risking your parents' life savings):

Hi

Yes if you dont own tracks you download, via any p2p client, not just limewire, even if you pay to get access to the tracks or a database of them its illegal.

However if you already own the music, ie have paid for it in the shop then i cant see the harm in downloading it but only if you have legaly purchased it.

There are licensed companies where you can download music, without having to go to the shops, like itunes for example, if you want to be completely safe id just buy the albums in the shop

C'mon Niki, grow up and show some maturity here. Your step dad knows what he's talkiing about and he's trying to show you the high moral road to keep you from stealing other people's music.

Wisdom sometimes comes with age, and in this case, he's right !!

Good Luck
