It will cut on but after like 1 minute it will cut off and the lenses will only let out half way. I don't know how to fix it and the local camera shop just closed down. I would take it back but it was a gift and I dont have the reciept and the person just passed away!! How can I fix it? The store won't work on it w/o the proper papers!

Any store will work on it, but perhaps not as a warranty repair. You MIGHT be able to argue your case (no receipt) with Canon as they can look up the serial number and get an idea when the camera was manufactured.

Something similar happened with my Nikon Coolpix 4300. It was because it had inadvertently come on while it was in my camera bag and the lens couldn't extend all the way. It broke a small screw inside the lens. Apparently, that's a problem that's fixable, but it might not be covered under your warranty. If your camera is still under the manufacturer's warranty, try sending it in to Canon and having them take a look at it. There's a chance that they might repair it if there is no other visible damage (if they send you a letter asking you to pay for the repair, call and ask to speak to somone higher-up and have that person pull your camera and examine it. That's what I had to do to get mine repaired for a different issue.) If it's not under warranty, take it to a camera shop and see how much they would charge to fix it. Digital cameras are so small and sensitive, and getting so inexpensive (relatively speaking) that many places don't do repairs, because it's cheaper to just buy a new camera.

Also make sure you are using fully charged batteries (don't use regular alkaline batteries) only use rechargeable NiMh or non rechargeable Lithium batteries...and also check the user manual, troubleshooting guide.
