Think about it, no car insurance so every dent or ping or crash that you have has to be paid for out of your own pocket, including those you cause on other cars. So would people drive slower and safer?
No house insurance - would people be more cautious with lighters and gas cookers and things liable to cause fires?
No health insurance - would people stop smoking and eat sensibly?
Just a line of thought to see what responses it provokes - what do you think?

would they drive safer with no insurance? i seriously doubt it for maybe 10% of all car drivers. in this 10%, i would include those that: speed at 15 mph or more over the limit, yak on cell phones while in heavy traffic, blow thru stop signs with barely giving a glance for incoming traffic, tailgater's...all just for starters. these are just some of the driver's that biker's fear the most, especially the one's we call the 'left turn killer'. these are drivers that do a turn in front of us at practically point blank range because their too interested in yakin on the phone...i had to avoid 3 of those type last season with inches to spare.

no health insurance...hmmm, maybe it would force doctors, drug companies, and hospitals to try to hold costs down to a more realistic level. seems to me, just walking past the front door of the e.r. will soak ya for about a grand almost. cigarette smoking is a extremely hard to kick addiction habit that those that's never smoked just doesnt understand. i found the best way to stop smoking tho after trying to quit for 22 or 23 years, but the method isnt cheap either.

homeowner's insurance? hmmm. it isnt just carelessness with things that might cause fires...and what u listed is common sense; u forgot about faulty electrical wiring. but u also cant predict with 100% certainty that ur house wont get damaged or destroyed by an act of nature...whether its from a tornado, flood, mudslide, earthquake, or hurricane. tornadoes tend to reduce a house to a pile of matchsticks, and houses aint cheap to replace.

It would not make any difference in the way people behave or drive or eat for that matter. People get car insurance because it's the law. They still drive crazy. Alot don't care because insurance will pay for it. People would still be reckless and irresponsible with or without insurance. They wouldn't eat right either. To many people think nothing will happen to them. You don't need insurance until something happens.

An accident is an unfortunate event which occurs unexpectedly and unintentionally.

Insurance, in law and economics, is a form of risk management primarily used to hedge against the risk of catastrophic financial loss. Insurance is defined as the equitable transfer of the risk of a potential loss, from one entity to another, in exchange for a premium and duty of care.

In short, I don't think people currently drive with the intention of causing damage or injury.

If I was driving, and my front wheel fell off my car and I lost control and hit someone, I wouldn't want my family to loose EVERYTHING because of something I could not have avoided.

Your posting does raise some interesting thoughts however.
If a nine year old develops cancer for some reason, how would he/she pay for the medical expenses?

If car insurance didn't exist, would people drive safely as they'd have to pay for the accidents they caused?

I really doubt they would i mean there are people who don't have insurance and they sometimes try and beat the system and hit and run that is why we have that so what areyou going to do? i mean hey they make them pay up front so far but the second payments never gets there i don't think there is much to discuss.

No, they'd just get a car that was big and hard enough to win in any accident.

with most insurances, if you're at fault for an accident, your rates will go up, so basically, you are paying for the accident

I doubt it. Many people still drive without insurance and those are the ones that drive all reckless.

I trust my own driving, its the driving of others that scare me.
