A digital meter will tell you by displaying the negative symbol before the voltage when tested. These meter are quite inexpensive and can be purchased for about 20 dollars. If your asking about a car's battery you can make a simple tester from a 12V bulb. Put one wire on the car's frame and the other wire on one of the posts. If it lights, that's the positive terminal!

What kind of battery....there are about 30,000 different battery designs. On single cell batteries the nipple end is always positive. On 9 volt batteries the male end is the positive end. Car batteries are alsways marked on the battery, with the red lead always comming off the positive end. Red for red hot. On flat battiers like for watches, and car key reomotes the larger surface or the top of the battery is always positive. Usually the greater the surface area of a battery will indicate the positive end.
