There is no real way to test an animals iq.. you can have the smarteest dog in the world that came from the pound.. and then you can get a pedigreed dog from a breeder and it can be dumber than a box of rocks... in all honesty a dog is who you help it become.. yes they have their own smarts but you as their friend can add to it...

I think it would be impossible to test the intelligence of an animal. Intelligence is based on IQ which is determined by a test that is designed by humans and is unfortunately in this case in the human language. Also, IQ and basic common sense are not the same thing and often a person may be well endowed with one and severely lacking in the other. I think you are referring to trainability, in which case I think it would be the german shepard closely followed by the labs and retreivers. That is why the seeing eye foundation primarily uses these breeds, not all, but some can be trained to do some outstanding things for disabled people such as watching for traffic and crossing the street with their disabled owner, answering the phone, retrieving items from another room by name (many dogs can recognise up to 50 different items by name alone), and alerting their owner of danger or fire.

The Border Collie is the most intelligent of breeds. It's a breed that truly "needs a job" to be happy. Jack (Parson) Russell Terriers are up there in IQ also. One thing about intelligent breeds..... they are usually a step ahead of most owners. This is why so many of the intelligent breeds are in shelters. Smart is not always a GOOD thing! When choosing a breed be sure to study the breed temperament and mental needs as well as physical.

All dog breeds are intelligent, it's just that some people mistake determination, stubbornness and tenacity for stupidity.

that really can't be answered accurately. different breeds thought processes are different. some are free thinkers like border collies, some are single-minded when focused and so on.
