Because God knows that seeing is believing. People ask all the time why he does not reveal himself. He already did that in his sonJesus.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that who so ever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Reverse chicken trap? Since I don't know what that is, I answer with fear and trembling. Jesus came to Earth, or more specifically came into the material world to unite creation with creator. That is to say that God is pure Spirit and humans did not live up to the potential that was in them as being made in the image of God. So God sent God's self into the world in the form of Jesus. Jesus is the 'mediator' between Heaven and Earth. He is the one through whom the world is reconciled to God. This make the Incarnation very important. This is why in Church when saying the creed we bow at the mention of the Incarnation, to show our reverence for that time in history when the Word of God took human form in the person of Jesus, who was the Christ.

Jesus was a character created by humans who were attempting to make things better around here. It's too bad that message was used to justify many bad things, instead.

I'd love to see a "detail" about this reverse chicken trap... I'm woefully uninformed on that one.

The answer is found in the Holy Bible the book of John 1:29

John the Baptist said "Behold the Lamb of God,(talking of Jesus)
which taketh away the sins of the world."

Reverse chicken trap? Is that anything like snipe hunting?

Jesus came for several reasons. One to make the attempt to go to the jews as their Messiah and King, knowing they would reject Him...(triumphal entry and later crucifixion) , To die for the sins of the world, in order that God could impart life to those who place their faith in what Christ did. To glorify the Father. I'm sure there are reasons I can't think of too.

To say : 'Hey everyone! I'm God! and I'm here to cleanse you of your sins so that you will be forgiven and go to heaven just for believing in me!
Now you don't have to feed God's blood lust for slaughtering baby lambs and squirting blood out all over the alter and setting it on fire!
God sent me to be your final human sacrifice! Now God's bloodlust is satisfied and you can get into heaven by saying you love me!'

Jesus came to earth to show us how to live. Jesus taught us by His example that God loves us and will always forgive us, if we are sorry. Jesus taught us to love others as God loves us. Jesus greatest act of love was asking God to forgive those who put Him on the cross. His resurrection taught us that no matter what we try to do to love, to God, Love never gives up. Love never dies. .

To become the last Adam and show the world how not to sin. To conquer death and allow our sins to be forgiven.

I was going to answer your question in a nicer way using the Bible until I read your wisecracking subtitle.
