We talking population or city size?
Birmingham has a population of about 1 million people, making it the second most populated city in England.
Sheffield is the 3rd largest city in population terms with about 512,000 people.
Leeds has a population of about 450,000 people making it the 4th largest city.
Manchester has a population of something close to 440,000 people, putting it in joint 5th place with Liverpool.
Rankings of Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool often change because they are very similar.

In terms of size,it is Birmingham at 283 square kilometers. In terms of population,it is Leeds,at 715,402 people. [Of course, both of these numbers will be out of date by now].
These statistics were dated February 2006.I got them from 'population of English Cities' by Woodlands Junior School.
