Anyone can babble and make idiotic sounds come out of thier mouth. When I was a kid, my sister and I used to pretend we were talking in french. So we'd babble away to each other, while the younger sisters looked at us like we were crazy. They were mad cause we couldn't tell them what we were saying. A baby can babble away for hours, are they speaking in tongues? The new testament says, if you speak in tongues, provide a translator so the rest can be enlightened, otherwise, it is of no use whatsoever. Would you put a babbling baby, as the head of a church? I think grown ups that babble, are religious zealots, and a little unstable.

In my humble opinion, it seems that there are two kinds of tongues mentioned in the Bible. There is a private prayer language (cf. 1 Cor. 14) and speaking in known languages without having learned them (cf. Acts 2). The first is for prayer, between you and God, and for your edification, and the second is as a witness to God's power, so that people would come to know God.
I wouldn't get real hung up on timing- you said you had a religious experience with God, right? God was faithful to you, and reached out to you, even in the midst of hardship. As I said, I would just praise God that He was faithful, that He poured out His Spirit on you even as a child, and was trying to show His love for you even though you were going through a hard time. Let that be for you a sign of God's unfailing love, and let it take you closer to Him, wherever you are now with Him. His desire is to bless you with every blessing on earth and in heaven. Praise Him for His faithfulness, and embrace Him as your loving Heavenly Father.

Speaking in tongues, these days, is one sure-fire way to know you're in the wrong religion.
For a brief period, in the first century, speaking in tongues was a possibility ....but please note Acts 2:8-11:
When the Christians spoke in tongues, they spoke in the 'tongue' (language) of the various language groups visiting Jerusalem.
Those people were astonished to understand, saying:
"how is it we are hearing, each one of us, his own language in which we were born? We hear them speaking in our tongues about the magnificent things of God.. . ."
These days the so-called speaking in tongues usually comes out as alot of gibberish.
That same Bible quote says the purpose of speaking in tongues was "to hear the magnificent things of God."
These days the gibberish cannot be thought of as magnificent.
PLUS
Such a practice was foretold to end.
1 Corinthians 13:8 " . . .But whether there are gifts of prophesying, they will be done away with; whether there are tongues, they will cease. . ."
Those gifts ceased when christianity became firmly established.
If some church continues that practice now, wonder about its source.

It certainly is described as a gift of the spirit in Acts but I feel it is overused in our culture of showmanship. I left the Pentacostal chuch simply because I felt it was staged. I am much more comfortable in the conservative and funamental approach to teaching that the Baptist church offers.

I agree with the first answer. There's also no real documented proof that people actually speak languages they've never heard before, while having these "religious experiences".

According to Scripture you only receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit after having received the Holy Spirit.
P.s. don't bother listening to the unbeliever posts...who don't even know the Scriptures....they say anything to discredit God's People.

In order to be "saved" there has to be something to be saved FROM. Which there is not.
I'm not saying your phenomenon isn't of spiritual significance. I'm saying it has nothing to do with the Christian concept of the universe, which is silly and impossible.

Mathew 6:7 And when you pray do not keep on babbling like pagans for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him

Personally I think someone speaking in tongues is a sign of mental illness. I don't think it has anything to do with being saved.
Blessed Be.

Speaking in tongues is nonsense-religionists should wake up to reality and recognise that fact.
