Having hip and knee pain I strongly recommend you do water exercises. This will remove the strain on these joints. Exercise will definitely help the problem, but you need to do it where you're not placing added strain by using a treadmill. If you belong to a gym use the pool or the Jacuzzi. If not ask your doctor where you can get water therapy.

It depends on the source of your pain. If it is osteoarthritis, then some exercise is good for it and will likely improve the pain. The best thing to do is exercise until it starts to hurt, then stop. Come back the next day and try again but push it only slightly (by 1-2 steps more).

Gentle stretching exercises or Pilates works for me. I am lucky to have a Total Gym that I can do those on. It is very relaxiing and helpful, with no stress.

Or if you have access to a pool, excersing these areas in the pool will take the weight off the joints, but you'll still get a good workout.

Well, if you have the pain from being over weight. working out at a moderate pace is an okay idea. If you have had a child with in the last year, make sure you are consuming enough calcium.
