www.akc.org is probably the most informative site you can find.

Its SOOOOO nice to see someone that is researcing breeds BEFORE they buy! GOOD JOB!!

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

If you're in the UK, go to Discover Dogs at Crufts in March. Virtually every breed will be there in person with knowledgeable owners to tell you about their breed characteristics.
The link below tells you about every breed recognised by the Kennel Club. Just click on the links for each group then on the individual breed.

Hi if you look on the 'champdog' web site then you can see many breeds and also find local breeders so you can get in touch if you are serious and research your chosen breed.

Try puppyfind.com. AKC.org might be allright for you, but they don't have every breed. My breed of choice is by far an American Bulldog, and you won't find them at the AKC. They are known by a whole lot of other organizations, NKC, ARF, BBC, and lots of others.

http://www.dogs365.com/Dog-Breeds/

It has all breeds listed in alphabetical order. The website provides a brief description of each breed and has pictures of what the dogs look like.
(look at labradors, they're extremely friendly and cute!)
