Personaly, the only time I DON'T use O/D is if I'm loaded, or towing.

yeah, what the first guy said... the overdrive is like fifth gear. It shifts the engine lower so it doesn't have to work hard, when you're flying down the freeway.
Your automatic transmission can handle when to use it, so keep it turned on all the time. If fifth gear is a bad gear to use (when you're towing up a hill for instance), your truck will figure it out and pick a different gear.

If you read our owners manual you will find out that it states that you should never allow your transmission to go into O/D under 55mph. Never use your O/D with a load over half of the trucks max towing capacities. If your towing under half the max and there is hilly terrain or maintains you should turn the O/D OFF. If you use your transmission properly, it will last you longer. When allowing your transmission to in-gage O/D under 55, there is a greater chance you will be having allot of shifting. You transmission will be constantly shifting in and out of O/D. This causes wear. Good Luck

I have a f150 and a car, both with o/d that stays on all the time.No problems with ether one and both have two hundred thousand plus miles on them.

after 45 mph. keep in reg. drive in town. otherwise it'll lug motor and cause carbon buildup in intake plenum, imrc motors. ford has tsb on this
