I just got a cocker mix and he's all those things but the shedding. HE does shed a bit but with daily brushing it's not too bad.

He is real laid back, he is the perfect size and he's very sweet.

We have a cavalier king charles. We wanted the same thing as yourself and she is fantastic. Never chewed anything even the kids leave toys on the floor and she does'nt touch them. Really easy to control and the breeds are called lap dogs as they are just as happy to sit on your lap as go out on long needed walks like some dogs need. Great personality would not have any other other breed she is fab. Ps Im no expert in training or anything but she is so well behaved, hardly barks or anything.

Its SOOOOO nice to see someone that is researcing breeds BEFORE they buy! GOOD JOB!!

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

I myself think your still way to vague. Do you have children? Do you have other pets, are you looking for a puppy or a adult dog, Do you have a fenced in yard. Are you looking to have it as a lap dog? are you looking for something more on the protective side? I feel it is hard to say look into a maltese or a yorkie or boston terrier or a min pin , pitulls, greater swiss mountian dog,Standard Schnauzer, I mean, you didn't mention if your looking for a purebred or a mixed breed. Just curious :)

Shiht zu's (spelling) are a smaller dog, but they are great companions and love to play. A real people dog. They don't shed because they have real hair, but they do need care. Also, the only drawback is they cost quite a bit. Usually anywhere from $200 - ?. But they are worth it.

portugese water dog or a soft coated wheaten terrier --- all pups are active,,, you would be doing a good thing by enrolling in obedience classes when your new pup is old enough.... go to AKC.ORG and research these breeds

You cant just go by breed. All dogs have different personalities and temperaments.
