I took mine into Boots who sent them away to be done, Klick photo shop sells you an envelope for £19.99 and you put your tape in it and just pop it in the post, took just over a week, good results, but depends on quality of tape.Other photo shops do it as well but prices vary. They can only put up to 2hrs on one DVD.

First you can not transfer video to CD as this will be the wrong format, what you will need is a DVD-VHS combination recorder.
or a DVD recorder so you can plug in a VHS video recorder. when you play a tape the DVD recorder will record the content.
simply put a blank DVD+RW in the DVD tray first then select your VHS tape to be copied.
Note: that what ever condition the tape is in, then that is what will be copied to the DVD disk.
and if you want to you could even copy a DVD disk to DVD by using a DVD player plugged into the DVD+RW recorder instead of the video recorder. good luck

Funnily enough I have just spent this morning transferring some old videos onto DVD. I have a Bush DVD-video combination which can play either media, or record from video to DVD or vice-versa. Rather complicated instruction book (probably easy for a 10-year-old!) but worth the effort.
I thin there are some high street shops that do this too, sometimes video rental stores offer this service.
