Mass and energy were produced shortly after the big bang event as the result of the rapid inflation which resulted in mass/energy being produced in equal but opposite amounts to negative gravitational potential energy. For the first 300,000 years the universe was too dense and opaque for light to be visible. Today we can directly observe the microwave background radiation from approximately 300,000 years after the big bang event.
