I know that Vets suggest to have your cat spayed or neutered at 6 months of age. I was just wondering if a male cat could mate with a female cat that is in heat before 6 months?

If they are both sexually mature then the answer is yes. Both male and female cats are often ready by 6 months.

Usually, female cats reach sexual maturity between 6-9 months of age, and males between 9-12 months of age. These are just guidelines, though, and don't gaurantee that female cats will wait until that half year mark to come into season. I've seen some female cats come into heat as early as four-and-a-half months. Not only did she conceive, but she suffered a very dangerous pregnancy littered with medical problems. She did survive the labor and delivery of the kittens, but it's significantly stunted her growth and left her with the scars of the numberous complications.

Yes, they can. They can start as early as 4 months.
Do you realize that for every 1 person born, there are 7 puppies and kittens
born? At best, 1 will find a forever home.
And don't forget, that every "Free-to-good-home" litter takes homes away
from animals already at the shelter.

STOP letting your pets; or your friends, relatives or co-workers pets
contribute to the problem.
If you love animals, it is NOT ENOUGH to merely say "My pets are fixed".
Vow to educate and enable others to fix their pets too.
Spaying just 1 female dog or cat, will prevent 6 others from ending up in a
shelter the following year.
Please be part of the solution, NOT the problem!
Thank you. ^..^

No, I don't think they mate before 6 months. It also depends on the time of year, because cats have mating seasons. so even if he reaches 6 months before the mating season, he will not mate until the mating season comes.
