Some people believe that they are overtaken by a spirit who speaks through them in an unknown language. Basically, it is jibberish, as is the entire concept.

I as a pentecostal believe in speaking in tongues. I haven't been blessed enough to do so yet...

an ecstatic utterance of largely unintelligible speechlike sounds that is viewed, esp. among Pentecostal groups, as a manifestation of profound religious experience; gift of tongues; glossolalia.

It's a joke. It means you can talk gibberish-claim you're divinely inspired and no one could prove otherwise. Then again anyone with half a brain knows that speaking in tongues is crap anyway-it's just another religionist delusion.

The latest neuro-physiological research shows alteration occuring in the brain during
"speaking in tongues".
Christians can interpret that in similar fashion as to
what they do when they interpret the bible.
Namely, make it fit
what they wish to believe.

Depends on who you talk to. Catholics worry it could be the devil or an evil spirt taking possession of you. Pentacostals think a good spirt has sort of gotten into you.
