In one of the books I read in an effort to improve my abilities to do my job as a police officer, I read the following facts.
If a defense attorney ever asks why you used bad language when confronting a suspect, admit the following.
This was a serious encounter, the fact that I used bad language showed that it was a very serious situation.

Example 1: Sir, please drop the gun, that is a dangerous weapon and it would be negligent of you to persist in your activities of pointing it in our direction, we may take action if you don't stop.

Example 2: Hey @#$%##@@%^~ ! DROP THAT GUN RIGHT NOW OR YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS A MEANINGLESS PIECE OF PAPER!

Plus the people we deal with daily especially the ones who are perpetrators use VERY bad language. When dealing with someone who has a limited vocabulary, maybe not the sharpest person from your contact, you don't speak way above their heads.

Example 1: Sir, I understand that you feel some miscreant has unlawfully gained entry to your transportation possibly purloining items which they have no lawful reason to remove.

Example 2: So someone broke into your car, you didn't give anyone the OK to remove stuff? Sir, we'll make a report, you got ripped off.

Any questions?

While not condoning angry police officers -take a moment to consider the job. The police are called to handle the gritty details of life in society that other people do not want to handle. They have to deal with beligerent, drunk, drugged, mentally unbalanced people and see people at their absolute worst and angriest. In addition, a good percentage of the people they talk to lie to them.
For this they risk their lives and as you can see by some of the other answers posted here-receive very little respect in some quarters for doing their jobs. After awhile it eats away at their psyches, makes them cold and cynical and as a result-yes, they may tend to swear from time to time.

i work around alot of police and i asked the same question. the answer that they give me is this:

people forget that they are real people and they have problems too. wife is cheating, bills are due, kids are doin bad in school. and then they have to come to work and face some of the toughest scenes and go up against the hardest criminals and rarely do they see any appreciation. i'm told it's hard to seperate it all out sometimes and after a while...it's hard to remembe there's any good out there.

Sometimes in order to commucate with some of the dirtballs you encounter you have to speak on a level they understand.

Where is this? Maybe you are the one making them so mad. I have never cursed at anyone while on the job, nor had another LEO curse in my presence.
