The Korean alphabet is pretty easy to learn and it is really taught before students learn to do anything else. So the expectation is that if you are interested enough in Korean to try to be speaking it, then you would have probably learned to read it first.

Another reason is that the romanization isn't really standardized. For example: There is a city in Korea named Cheonan...but sometimes you see it spelled Chonan and sometimes Chunan.

The government tried to standardize the romanization a few years ago, but not everyone agrees with the new system and some people still use the old one.
