Sprinkle the slices with lime or lemon juice and keep those slices in a closed plastic bag.

It browns from the oxygen hitting the fruit and to combat it you need to add the acid (lemon, lime, etc - orange would even work but the flavor would be awful)

To store cut fruit, sprinkle it with lemon or lime juice or white vinegar and place it in an air-tight covered container in your refrigerator. Eat within a day or two.
(from the CA Avocado Commission website)

I've found that the best is just to try to keep sliced avocado. Although if you happen to have leftovers you can puree the fruit and freeze it in an airtight container for 4-5 months.

OK use a plastic knife first to cut it if possible a ceramic one. immediately splash lemon or lime juice onto the surface of the avocado and cover it with saran wrap be sure the wrap actually touches the avocado on all surfaces then wrap it again a second time and immediately refrigerate it. It should have been cold when you started this. There may be a thin brown layer the next day. It's harmlesss and you can eat it but just cut it off. Whatever you do store it away from fruits like apples they will make them spoil faster.

If you keep the pit in the Avacado half you will be refrigerating and rub the cut edges in lemon juice, it will stay fresh for 24-48 hours. Also, if you make a salsa with avacado and want the color to stay fresh, plop the avacado seed in the midst of the salsa, cover w/plastic wrap, and the salsa will be bright and freshly color and flavored for 24-48 hours.

You can squirt lemon or lime on it to help it last longer. Cover with clear wrap closely on the avacado and keep in tupper ware. Eat within 2 days of cutting because it wont last long. It
is sensitive once peeled or cut...

I use lemon juice on the cut side, and place it cut side down in a tupperware dish. Or you could use Italian dressing instead of the lemon juice. Works like a charm!
